With all the CLD's, RJ's, closing of cards, etc, etc, etc., I am ready to sock-drawer them all and just let happens what happens. I am not in the market for credit or purchasing anything within the next 2 years. Until all this economic situation gets settled down and we all know where we stand, it is depressing and frustrating trying to keep up with it all on a daily basis.
I'll tell you what I do. I use each of my cards to pay a different monthly recurring bill by automatic bill pay. One pays my gas bill, water bill, etc. That way I don't have to keep up with which card I need to use this month or quarter to keep it active. This method works very well for me.

Just make sure you do whatever it is you need to do keep all your trade lines open. Do that and you will be fine.
there are any number of cards less visible than the ubiquitous (major) issuers', several offer rather favorable terms and cs compared to some 'big boy' products from amex, boa, chase and citi. they can often be good back up or primary instruments.

odball cards? Name a few, I would really like to know some.
This current situation is really no different than an IRA or 401k retirement account. The values fluctuate and have ups and downs, but in the long run if you keep to a good conservative strategy you will win.
If you fail to use your cards, then you may create the very situation you fear: CLD or closure.
Therefore, just use them in a conservative manner, PIF and never max/over limit.
