Just wondering if buying an online gift card through Marriott's website would trigger the $300 annual credit? I've read in a few places that if you go to a Marriott property that sells gift cards then you can purchase those and it will code as a hotel expense, but has anyone successfully done it online this way?

Marriott gift cards are not actually sold by Marriott themselves; online is out. Anything that is actually charged through any location’s merchant account will count. That’s everything from room charges to room service, and almost always restaurants. Often other businesses in the same building will share the coding also. The Starbucks on the ground level of the Marriott Marquis in Times Square gets 6x points on the Marriott cards, for example.
