Re: SYNCB closed PayPal MC Again

I get regular offers for me to apply for a PayPal MC, and this is one of the reasons I'll never have one.  This bank seems crazy.  Sorry you got closed, it seems like you know what you're doing and likely have good insights on this.  Crazy either way, def looks like CLI spiked the actions.

Re: SYNCB closed PayPal MC Again (Update)

Quick update to this post. So I finally received the letter from SYNCB and just like I suspected, the request for a CLI triggered the closure of my PPMC (nothing to do with my credit). Thankfully, my Venmo MC is still open as of today. Lesson learned!IMG_0655.jpeg

Wow, that sucks.

And you had a zero balance on the card when it was canceled?  How much CLI did you ask for?

Despite what that letter says, I think it might be your 96% util on that other card, perhaps in conjunction with the CLI request and recent inquiry.  These things can be additive to some stupid algorithm.

Re: SYNCB closed PayPal MC Again (Update)

The issue is the high utilization on the one card coupled with your credit seeking behavior requesting CLI's. I understand that it's ego busting to think that the closure of your accounts is a results of your actions, but unfortunately it is. Again, Synchrony did not close your account for "Nothing" as you described. The lesson learned from this is Synchrony's risk assessment algorithm doesn't like to see utilization on any card of 96% and credit seeking behavior

The undisputable fact is people ask for CLI's all the time on Synchrony cards, sometimes every 30 days and have had no issues. It's unfortunately that your account was closed again, however, I have to point out that it was closed before and for the same reason so you actually knew better but decided against your better judgment and proceeded to test your luck.

Re: SYNCB closed PayPal MC Again (Update)

@CreditPoor @Patient957 I still strongly disagree with the both of you that it was credit related concerns. Riddle me this - if it was truly credit related, how on earth are they only spooked with a $1K limit card but not the $12k card? Does it even make sense. Besides, I requested an increase on both PPMC and Venmo the same day. So if something on my credit spooked them, they would've canceled both cards. The only difference was, Venmo was my first request since the last increase in November whereas it was the 9th time with PPMC.

It is well established that when SYNCB takes credit based adverse action, it's universal. They literally shut down EVERY account the cardmember has and the letter details the credit issues that caused it. None of that was the case here, it literally said "Activity on account". Besides y'all making it seem like this card always had a 96% utilization. It was only the last statement it went up that high. Generally, banks proceed to close an account only when a high utilization has gone for an extended period of time, not on a whim.

Cos if we were to use this same logic, that means anyone who reports a high utilization on a single card in any given month will have their card shutdown immediately but we all know that's far from the truth. And for clarity, when my PPMC was closed the first time it happened 2 days post approval after I called Credit Solutions to increase the starting limit. I never even got the physical card in the mail to this day.

However, the circumstances are different this time around cos I've had the card for about a year now and have established a positive usage and payment history with them. Did I know the frequent request will result in a closure?! Not really! But the first time, it took a single request and my card was shut down so you just never know how they gon getcha. But anyways, I ain't trippin over losing a $1k card. It was my lowest limit and I tried hard to get it outta that range but guess what! I don't gotta worry bout doing that no more.

I think it's probably just an algorithmic thing.  Algorithms don't always act in ways that make perfect sense to us mortals.

If it needs to make sense, you could could say closing the $1K account was a shot across the bow, and they're coming for your Venmo account next if you don't tread lightly.

Yeah trust me I'm treading lightly. The current limit on the Venmo is more than enough. I only use it for the 3% category on Bills & Utility so I'll continue using and paying it off soon as charges post like I already do. If they decide to auto increase it, great! If they don't, still perfectly fine!

Re: SYNCB closed PayPal MC Again (Update)

Wow, you speak with so much certainty about something you cannot possibly know. We can all guess, but the only fact in this conversation regarding why Synchrony closed the account is in that letter, and it is quite ambiguous: Activity on account(s) with Synchrony Bank indicative of high risk of failure to pay.

If anything, "activity on account(s) WITH SYNCHRONY BANK" excludes high utilization on a non-Synchrony account.

Re: SYNCB closed PayPal MC Again (Update)

My account was closed on the same day, and my letter arrived with the same reason.
