After having my US Bank Platinum card for a few years and never seeing an increase, I finally bit the bullet and requested an increase OF $5,000 (making my total CL $7,000), authorizing a HP for the increase. Today, I logged on to my account and noticed that my increase was granted, however, my total CL was $5,000 instead of $7,000. I called to ask if this was a counter offer, or if it was a mistake, and the gentleman I spoke with said it was noted in my account that I requested a limit of $5K. Err! I verified with the original CSR before ending that call that I was requesting an increase of $5k, bringing my total credit limit to $7k.
The SAME thing happened to me when I requested an increase with my Citi card. Asked for an increase OF $3k and instead, they gave me a total credit line of $3k.
Both times I confirmed verbally, more than once, what I was asking for.
Seriously? So frustrating. End rant.
That sucks.. They should have made it clear ... AmEX and GECRB always do.. when you request CLI of $5000 that means you want your new credit limit to be $5000 ..Not $5000 plus whatever limit you had.
The CSR and I BOTH stated that the total requested would bring my total limit to $7k.
And, it'd be another HP to get the additional $2k at this point (even though they pulled it 2 days ago).
That stinks... I guess from now on, I would not do the math out loud for them. I would just say an increase to X

Yeah it's best to do this. State the new limit that you want, not the amount of increase. It'll save you a whole lot of drama. Good luck next time around though, and congrats on the CLI regardless.
