Re: Setting Your >2026< Annual Card Strategy

2025: (https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/2025-Setting-Your-gt-2025-lt-Annual-Card-Strategy/m-p/...)

More card shuffling and a few ups and downs. Possibly add 2 cards:

Upgrade my oldest BofA CCR Visa to a BofA PR (planned for late January).

Last year I opened a new BofA PR, and after 6 months I was able to downgrade it and retain no-FTF. I'm going to attempt to upgrade (then downgrade after 6 months) my older CCR Visa and see if it can be reforged into a no-FTF card as well to increase its usefulness. Ideally, I'd like to have 3 (at least) out of 4 planned CCRs be no-FTF and cover Online Shopping, Travel, and Dining (I currently lack a dependable 5%+ dining card, especially with no-FTF)... the 4th card (currently my 3rd of the existing cards) is for Home Improvement/Furnishings, and there's not a lot of need for no-FTF for that, but I wouldn't say no to having it.

Close my Macy's AmEx (planned for May).

It will hit 15 years in May, which seems like a nice number to close it on. It's my second oldest card, but I really have a love/hate with it. The 3 10x points categories they have had over the last 3 quarters have been stellar, but Star Money is a horrible pain in the rear to use. They auto-issue it everytime you hit $10, and then you have 30 days to use it or lose it. Even getting what amounted to a few hundred dollars worth of spend, I'd really just rather not deal with it anymore. Those 10x categories have made it hard to justify the closure, but I just need to rip the bandaid off and be done with it.

Close my Ink Unlimited card (planned for June).

I will have kept it for two years, and I will see if I can transfer the remaining $500 CL off it. It was useful as another card for rotating on the CookUnity deals and the Amazon Fresh deals (which seem to have ceased as of this month), but it's completely unneeded as itself.

MAYBE open an AmEx Biz Gold (planned for June if so).

Keeping an eye on SUBs for this. I want to knock this out sometime during a big spend period, so that I'm not locked out of the SUB for this one if I want a Biz Platinum down the road.

Open an AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card (planned for July).

So, last year I was flagged as having "too many cards" to open this card, even though I had closed a card the previous month, which put me at 4 cards (when my understanding is that the normal limit is 5 cards, plus 10 charge cards.) The rep I spoke to said it was likely that the system hadn't caught up yet since my closing was too recent, and to try again another time. I would like to pick up this card since it gives 10 more Elite Night credits per year than the other personal cards, and also gives Platinum status... both of which would count towards passively earning Platinum LIFETIME status... so I'd like to get the clock started on that.

Upgrade my Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless to Ritz-Carlton card (planned for July).

When I was unable to grab the AmEx Brilliant last year, I jumped over to Chase to start the clock ticking on being able to product change to a Ritz card of my own. I will need to do this upgrade after I open the AmEx Brilliant, however, because of Marriott's card exclusion rules and order-of-operations. Then remove myself from P2's Ritz card as an AU so it stops showing up on my reports when he hasn't PIF Smiley Tongue

MAYBE open a Nibbles MasterCard (planned for July if so).

Considering this one. Will see if my cat is approved, and if they stick with the no-AF structure they switched to mid-2025. Who knows, they may shut down abruptly like Mesa did before this point.

MAYBE downgrade P2's U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve (Sept or sooner?)

Highly likely that I will have P2 downgrade this card to a Cash+, since it has almost no place in the line-up now since the nerf.

Well with the news of the BoA Preffered Rewards changes happening this year. I will wait until I hear what the changes will be, but based on the new levels($0-$30k, $30k-$100k,$100k-$1m, $1m+) I dont see how they don't move the 75% tier to the $1million mark unless they are adding a minimum checking account balance requirement or direct deposit requirement.  If that happens ill most likely close all my BoA stuff and go to an Apple Card + Schwab Investor card set up and maybe pick up a Amex Green or CS Plat.

Re: Setting Your >2026< Annual Card Strategy

My initial plan for the Langley card is out the window less then a month into the year. Was making some plans for PH and a future CCR. This new information might put my backup plan in limbo now.

NFCU Flagship (Daily Driver) | USAA Rewards (1999 Hooptie)

AmEx BCP (Groceries) | Aven Rewards (Groceries) | Chase Prime (Amazon) | Citi Custom Cash (Dining) | Elan MCP (Utilities)

EX(F8) 780 | EQ(F8) 802 | TU(F8) 796 | EQ(BC8) 810 | EX(10T) 782

Re: Setting Your >2026< Annual Card Strategy

Doing some thinking today about my options for if they bump the BoA Preffered Rewards tiers. My new plan for if it comes to fruition is:

Get a NC SECU 2% cash back card that they released last year as they are my main bank.(well its a 1.5% plus a bonus 0.5% if you have $500 of direct deposit a month but again, main bank)(Not a 0 FTF card but it is only 1% FTF and i would travel with other cards for this)

Get a Hilton Surpass to get National Executive status as that was the main point to get a BoA PRE.

Re: Setting Your >2026< Annual Card Strategy

This year I am going Active Duty Military as an Officer. Unfortunately, later than expected, which means I am going to have to pay those high annual fees on my cards one more time 😪.

I do have a couple things in my plan though, first, as soon as my CSP second year fee hits, I plan to PC to the free card with UR so I can keep my 100k SUB.

After that, I plan to get the CSR with SUB, which I heard is now possible without waiting (am I right?)

Then, the obvious play is to get my free Amex plat.

By far the coolest thing I will do though is get my Venture X annual fee waived, which they will only do for military members who had the card BEFORE active duty.

I dont think I'm missing anything else.

Re: Setting Your >2026< Annual Card Strategy

Nothing too crazy expected for this year. Will likely open a few cards and cancel some that were only opened for the SUB.

  • January
    • Opened Citi AAdvantage Platinum Elite for 80k AA points after (an incredibly low!) $1,000 in spend
    • Planning to open one of the new Bilt cards. Leaning towards Palladium for the SUB, but I don't think I can rationalize it after year 1. I have some concerns that Cardless will not allow product changes, and I don't want to be paying $495 for multiple years.
  • February
    • Likely finishing SUBs for both the aforementioned Citi card and an Amex BBP I opened in December. To the sock drawer they will go!
  • April
    • Check for retention or downgrade offers for Barclays Aviator Red card. If none, will cancel.
  • December
    • Cancel Chase Ink Unlimited that I opened in 11/25. Although with the ink train dying, who knows if cancelling it will have any practical benefit.

Miscellaneous:

  • Always keeping my eyes open for Amex BBP NLL offers.
  • Will be monitoring data points of Chase 5/24 to see if that's less stringent.
    • If so, I may try my luck with more Inks

Core Setup:

Current SUB(s):

Re: Setting Your >2026< Annual Card Strategy

Just started reviewing my year end spend reports from BoA for my PR and CCR.  Gives me a good idea of my spend being mainly 33% grocery, 33% dining, 15% generic online spend, 10% stuff like insurance and 5% travel.  Still not enough spend to chase specific categories.

Re: Setting Your >2026< Annual Card Strategy

2025 was a big change for my family. My wife got a new job where she travels a lot (she hit 97 nights with Marriott alone, just about Ambassador status). Instead of snagging any new cards, she used my CSP as an AU for food, any non-chain hotels, and ride shares (could be like 4-8 Uber/Lyft a week). She'll use her Marriott card for those hotels and my Surpass for any Hiltons.

For 2026, I'll probably stay the course, but I'm constantly considering going to a 1 card strategy for the majority of my spend. I'll wait for BoA to share more about the Preferred Rewards changes, but I'm considering consolidating most spend to my PR card (and maybe upgrade to the elite). My wife is already an AU, but I'd have her switch her travel spend to it and then use it as she has been using my CSP. I'd then start using it for nearly everything else. We'd still divert hotels to the proper card, obviously.

I'm always considering the 1 card setup so that I can use a slimmer wallet. As mentioned, I'll likely continue to stay the course. I'm currently banking URs for a future trip, so I probably won't switch anyway until that trip happens and I use my URs.

As we approach the new year, and with the goal of making credit changes a premeditated and mindful decision, what are the planned changes for your card lineup in 2026?

2026 Card Strategy

1. Garden: No New Personal Accts or INQs

2. Close 2-3 Accounts (TGT, BCE & Synchrony)

3. BT balance to Discover

4. Use PP Debit Card 5% grocery

No. 4 - Wallet strategy: CCR/UCR, 5% category cards, and PP Debit card for 5% on grocery; the latter should help meeting the monthly grocery budge

No. 3 - Typically, I'd request the Discover 0% APR promo this year, but IIRC customers can no longer initiate those offers 😞. If it isn't an option, I'll BT to Discover late 2026.

No. 2 - I closed two accounts in 2025. I closed TGT in early 2026 and will close a Sync account in late 2026.

No. 1 - New accounts hit one year this summer and I'm back to an INQ free profile in 2027.

Off to the garden 🌱 I go (again)!!!!!!

Re: Setting Your >2026< Annual Card Strategy

2026 goal and onwards.  Never waste a HP without getting a New CC in return (Last wasted pull, August of 25).  Want to bring my HP count down to nearly match my new CC count (some Issuers do multiple pulls).   This will allow me to be more eligible to apply for the unexpected and take advantage of new elevated SUB's or new CC's.  Preapps are your friend.

BofA: Citi:US Bank:Chase:Aven:RH:

Spend: Less than 10k per year organic (frugal). MS varies, can be more significant.

(Aug of 26) Scorecard: Clean, Thick, Mature (Always PIF)

HP's: EQ 1/6, 1/12, 7/24 | TU 1/6, 4/12, 7/24 | EX 0/6, 2/12, 9/24

New Accounts: 2/6, 6/12, 10/24
