Re: Setting your 2021 Card Strategy

@simplynoir

To clarify my rule....

My 10% rule is applied to total spend on each per month. For example let us say my average monthly spend Chase Flex is $225.00 some months it may be little higher or lower. No need for a credit limit increase on this card. Let say in a month I have to fly out of town unexpectedly and I need to replace the dryer plus my ususal spend on that card. For that month my bill may be around $1,500. I would not apply for a credit limit increase because I will pay it off in full when the bill is due. If I was consistently putting $1,100 a month or more on that card I would consider it because my 10% threshold id $1,050.

I don't really like my current portfolio of cards.  I got rid of my travel and dining cards when their annual fees came due.  I'm not dining or traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I don't expect the pandemic to abate until 2022.  So I'll stick with my current portfolio through 2021 with no new apps.  I really only use three of the cards (PenFed Power Cash, NFCU Flagship, and NFCU More Rewards), and one of those is redundant.  Hopefully, Chase Freedom will have at least one grocery quarter in 2021 so I can bring that card out of the sock drawer.

Off topic and just FYI - I see that you have the United MP in your signature.  If you feel like you won't be traveling anytime on the near horizon, you can always PC to the no-AF Gateway version until things normalize with any future travel.  This way you can save on the AF without having to close the card.

I don't understand what you're saying.  The United MileagePlus does not have an annual fee.  That's why I downgraded the United MileagePlus Explorer ($95 fee) to the plain vanilla United MileagePlus (no fee) a few months ago.

As I understand it, the Gateway (no fee) is inferior to the MileagePlus (no fee) in that the MileagePlus comes with "extra seat availability" and the Gateway does not.

Daily Carry: PenFed Power Cash • NFCU Flagship • NFCU More Rewards • Chase Freedom
Sock Drawer: PenFed Promise • NFCU cashRewards • Chase Sapphire Preferred • Chase Freedom Unlimited • United Explorer • UNFCU Azure

My bad, I glanced at your cards too quickly and assumed it was the MPE or Presidential Plus vs the plain MP.  Carry on.

Re: Setting your 2021 Card Strategy

I'm pretty satisfied with having the Chase Freedom Flex, Unlimited and Discover It as my long term cards. My only goal for cards going into next year the Amex Hilton Honors since I was unable to get it again this year. Other possible card on my radar is the X1, Venmo card or Amazon. My Cap1 Quicksilver will be put away and I'm closing my Quicksilver One and possibly my Shell card in 2021.

Re: Setting your 2021 Card Strategy

Most if not all my cards meet my spend categories, so I'm looking for more SP CLI then new accounts. Also looking to see when Truist will refresh their products with hopes to compete with top tier cards.

If I get good BT offers at mid 2021 I might spin the wheel.

AOD VS, MDSECU VS, or PNC VS CB, or NFCU Flagship.

I'd take a $500 SUB now over the hope that a card won't be nerfed for 50 months.

For us cashback folks, $500 subs are non existent.

Show me a non travel  $500 "Sub", and I will go for it.    Smiley LOL

Re: Setting your 2021 Card Strategy

Couldn't edit my reply so will put it here as I left out another goal card and that one would be a Synovus credit card of some shape or form. I am out of their blue print so will probably take a road trip next summer to a branch and apply.
