Should I apply to upgrade to Amex Gold from Green?

Re: Should I apply to upgrade to Amex Gold from Green?

From what I can tell, Gold comes with 3 major upgrades over Green:  the gold card destinations program, special access to some entertainment events, and roadside assistance anywhere (with Green you have to be 50+ miles from home).  Nothing too significant, but it's only an extra $30.

TannerK,

I see that you in your signature it says you have a Amex Centurion ????- The black card, I read online that the amex centurion was not available to any new card holders in the US..... its only available to holders in Asia, and middle east and currently they are not accepting any app for us holders...... If you dont mind me asking did you get the card this year ????

so basically gold is pretty meh in terms of an upgrade. Green seems to be where it is at in terms of cost vs. benefits for me. PR Gold is kinda a waste when you can book through orbitz on the amex website and get 3X MR points anyways on flights and hotels.

Re: Should I apply to upgrade to Amex Gold from Green?

I could technically upgrade to gold via getting the traditional gold for 85.00 and paying 40.00 to get membership rewards added. This seems pretty pointless because I would have to pay the annual fee in 45 days and there is no signup bonus. Might as well stick with the Green card for at least the next year since they waive the first annual fee.

I would garden for 6 more months also. Very good advice LS2982! I wouldn't rock the boat with amex.

I don't really have any choice at this point but to. The Green has everything I really need at this point. How long would it be recommended to wait to apply for an AMEX revolver? Having a Green card in good standing I would hope helps you in the application.

I would wait at least six months to apply for another one.

Re: Should I apply to upgrade to Amex Gold from Green?

In August I will have one year of credit history and six months or so of AMEX history. My next move would probably be a prime VISA/Mastercard revolver because I am not expecting Capital One to show me any cli love and AMEX is not accepted everywhere. I try to only use cash if I have to now and charge everything to my green card.
