You don't apply for any  CC that you expect to close in a few years.

It's funny how if you rebuild very quickly you end up on marketing lists on both sides of the fence.   I still get the ocassional First Premier and Orchard mailers even though I am solidly in prime territory now.  My most recent approval was Citi World MC with $6,500 CL and I now get offers for other Citi cards.  I still open and read the First Premer mailers just for a good laugh.
