Sign-up Bonus Recommendations

Hello myFICO community,

Within the next month I’ll be purchasing an engagement ring. I could use the Citi Double Cash and earn $200 of Rewards. However, I thought this would be the perfect purchase to take advantage of sign up bonuses. I use ‘bonuses’ as plural since I’m likely able to meet at least 2 sign up bonuses with the purchase. Note, I'm not churning, as I plan to keep the products I apply for.

I am open to products with Annual Fees (if it makes sense), however I do already have a Chase Sapphire Reserve that I use for travel and dining purposes. If the product does have an annual fee, I would prefer to be able to request a product change to a no annual fee product.

I would apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred. However, from what I understand it seems I don’t qualify for the sign up bonus since I opened the Sapphire Reserve on 9/23/2018 or 23 months ago and Chase requires a minimum of 48 months in this particular situation. Furthermore, I’ve opened 3 credit cards in the past 24 months. Therefore, the ‘5/24’ rule shouldn’t impact me.

With American Express, I only have the Blue Cash Everyday since 12/28/2014 or 5 years 9 months ago. Therefore, I seem to be eligible for all offers.

The Double Cash I opened on 9/10/2018 or 1 year 11 months ago. Though I don’t see any mention about the Double Cash and it seems sign up bonuses restrictions are placed only on Citi’s points based products.

Looking for any recommendations!

Going to depend on your specific goals. Cash back? Points? If points what travel partners are most useful to you. If an AF card whether those benefits will supplement the perks you already have etc. If airlines are of interest which ones?

Re: Sign-up Bonus Recommendations

I would say treat a SUB like a SUB. It's just a bonus for getting a card that you want, need, and will use.

Now if there's a few that meet your needs and you need help deciding, and say, one has a better bonus worth $50 more than the others, ask yourself does the extra $50 compensate for the disadvantages the card might have over the others, given the amount of time you think you'll keep the card (long-term ideally).

In most cases, a card might be a little bit better over another card that offers a little bit more of a SUB, but if you think you'll get more value out of it with less of a SUB, then taking a smaller SUB might be better.
