I'll give them a chance when I'm free sometime this weekend
I was told by a Macy's Rep in the past that it's six months. But someone else might have a difference experience and can chime in...
YMMV on this one.
Sometime last year, they increased me from $100 to $800 with either NO pull, or a soft pull.
As mentioned earlier, the CSR told me that I could ask again in six months...
I called in earlier this year for another CLI, got denied, then got a letter in the mail regarding the HARD pull from EQUIFAX!
Apparently, they soft EX and Hard EQ?????
Keep in mind that a lot of credit analysts are not trained extensively in credit terms. My aunt was a credit analyst at Chase, and she said she moved up to that from customer service and debt collection. An interesting thing was that she said whenever a customer requested an increase, they had to at least give them something. I also have three cousins who are credit analysts(one at Discover, two at Chase) and they also do not have extensive training in credit.
Most customers do not know the difference between a soft inquiry and a hard inquiry when it comes to a credit report. Most customers only apply for a new card once every few years so an inquiry may never be seen by any other lender. For this reason, companies may not make sure their representatives know the difference between them. Maybe they should, but they do not. I was also recently told it would be hard but it wasn't.
Macys will also mention that you received a credit limit increase before and tell you the current limit before proceeding. I reckon the reason for this is because you can't see it on the website and no one has time to go through all of that chaos on the telephone.
@Anonymous wrote:I can't answer your question, but I can empathize with your pain lol... I called BofA yesterday (back door number mind you) and the rep told me that it was against the law for lenders to initiate a CLI on their own without a direct request from the consumer and up to date financial proof that they could pay their debts lol
Silly CSRs!
Who knows. With the BABYCARD Act and people's stupidity increasing, lenders are more cautious about such things. I wouldn't be surprised if someone blamed the company for causing them to spend more and defaulting by raising their limit.
Lenders that require a hard inquiry for an increase deter frivilous increase requests. Often times here people request them without really needing them and if all lenders required a hard, that would most likely stop.

Wow Interesting!! I've only had them hard pull me once and that was for the Jewerly Club account. And you know tcbofade, you are right now that I think more about it....when I recieved the two increases on my store card, no soft pull showed up at all on my credit reports, even though the CSR said they would do a "soft Pull".
Now for the Jewerly Club Account, the lady said it would a "soft Pull" and it ended up being a hard pull...lol! SMH! And it shows up as a separate Macy's account on my credit reports. It helped my utl, but I was not aware it would be a totally separate account.
Calling them now to inquire again about a CLI on my store card. I'll report back....
When I called for increase in March it was a painless process and only a soft pull. I told the rep that I wanted an increase so that I wouldnt have to worry about utilization, she asked a few questions about my identity and told me I was approved for 1500 from 500. She never even asked how much I wanted.
She also told me I could request one everyone 4-6 months.
Put me in the category of folks who don't trust Macy's CSR information.
I requested a CLI on my Macy's $100 limit store card twice. First time I was told it would be a HP, second time I was told it would be a SP--both turned out to be HP's and each time I was denied any sort of increase. I closed the card as soon as the CSR denied my second request. Losing $100 wasn't going to affect my utilization very much, I was worried that other lenders would question the low limit (it had happened before) and I didn't want to feel the angry feeling I had every time I thought about the low limit. Haven't been back to Macy's to buy anything since.
I rarely trust a CSR, call me crazy but on the majority of the times, they have told me the wrong information
I got my Macys card in 2008 with a $200 CL (very bad credit so surprised I was even approved). In 2009 I call and make sure to ask whether it's a SP or HP, I'm told SP. Found out afterwards it was an HP on EX.
Since then I got an auto CLI to $2000 in 2010 and it has stayed this way ever since. I don't even dare call them for a CLI. Too much of a hassle having to call the CSR, escalate to the manager and tell him/her that i was told it's a SP bla bla then they tell you 'oh i'm sorry you were told the wrong information' and that's all they will do and you get stuck with a HP for 2 years
Not worth it for me
I went looking for an increase to and was denied...got the notification for inquiry next day and called them cause i was assured that it would be a SP......I told the rep i spoke to why wasn't it a SP like I was told , he said that if it is denied it would appear as a HP on your credit....i was like ummm that makes no sense, but decided to not waste my brain cells by arguing....
So if u get denied it is a HP, if u get approved it doh show up..............ummmmmmm
I called for an increase a few weeks ago. The CSR told me that it would likely be based on current data in their file. If the system told her that she had to pull my file she would be able to stop the process before it was pulled. I was at $500 and asked for $2,000. It was granted without the pull. I was also told that I could request again in another six months.
