It’s probably not a very far-fetched idea. Many people on here report SDing the card for months and getting CLIs.
if only it were that simple. i should have a 100k limit by now
There may be something to this, that Discover pays close attention to inquiries or CLIs from competitors (for customer loyalty/retention purposes, not just credit risk management).
The only unsolicited extra Discover ever gave me (over five years) was a $5 Starbucks e-gift card the day after I took a HP for a CLI from Chase (and got one). At the time, I had only three cards, so they may have figured there was some chance I could be a regular spender happy to earn 1%.
Of course, it didn't take them long to wise up...
*I'd also note that as a joint account holder, I'm ineligible for auto CLIs, so can't comment on that side of things.
I think we can come up with all types of theories, but DISCO is like cracking the da vinci code
Honestly I have put that card in SD and got zilch, used the card got zilch, so I just paid my balance off and have moved my current monthly charge to another card. This card is gonna be on ice for a long time, let's see what happens down the road LOL
I think there's some truth to the "tough love" approach with Discover. Many people have reported month after month of a solid spend with them and no CLI's at all with frequent requests... then they quit using the card cold turkey and throw it in the SD and within a cycle or two finally see a CLI. This can happen though without applying for another card. I think the fact that you acquired another card here was just a coincidence in terms of seeing that auto-CLI come. IMO, the auto-CLI would have came even without the addition of another card. I do think that the usage drop though may have stimulated the CLI.

Kinda feel like they do too. They were my highest @ $2400 with the next @ $1600. Then I combined my C1 cards to get $3100 and after that reported, they bumped me to $3600 and haven't gotten anything since with $2-$3000 going through it every month and PIF. Curious to see what happens now with NFCU reporting @ $15000. Not expecting them to come close to matching it by any means, just curious if it gets a rise out of them..
