Spending Power On Amex

Does anyone have experience using the spending power feature on Amex?  It seems like it isn't a good idea to go over the limit at anytime.

Re: Spending Power On Amex

I dont have experience but it seems pretty straight forward. If your limit is $2k and you want to put $3k on the card for the month, you can temporarily increase your spending power to cover that transaction. Maxing any card at anytime is not really a good idea. However you could use it and then pay before your bill closes so the "balance" doesnt hit your credit scores.

It's best not to poke bears or beehives and it's even better not to go over your limit with Amex, especially when your new to Amex, and while your at it don't check your spending power to often or as the maybe urban legend sates, you will open the gates to AA. Just use it under its limit to be safe and work on getting CLI's.

Of course!  I have never gone over my limit on a card and have no intent of ever using the feature! I just saw it and was curious.  I am a new Amex card holder as of today!

Re: Spending Power On Amex

You can go over your limit if nessescary, just be sure to pay it before any statements cut. My Delta card has a limit of $1000 which is not enough for the amount of plane tickets I buy (usually buy 3-4 tickets at a time). So I've broken that limit on a few occasions already with single delta transactions. I just pay it off a few days later once it posts. If you need to make a purchase over the limit then do it, but I wouldn't just go over the limit just because you can. Nor would I just sit over the limit just for fun either. Too much risk involved lol

Re: Spending Power On Amex

The past 6 months I've gone over it quite a few times with no issues. I only do it when I know I can pay it off fast. Anything over the limit is due in full plus you normal payment after the next statement comes out. Amex told me I can do 50% over the limit without issue so I never push it past that. They trust me on that amount so I'm happy with that. My current limit is 10K.

When you do go over the limit, the overage plus the minimum payment is due on the due date. In other words, you don't have the luxury of making monthly payments on the overage amount.

Re: Spending Power On Amex

I just got my PRG a week or so ago, and before using it for the first time I used the spending power link to let the Amex computers 'clear' the charge beforehand.

It was actually my very first purchase on the account, and the amount was $970... I checked it online and it was approved, then I used the card itself shortly afterwards and it went right through with no problems (the card was physically swiped, but I was out of state).

I generally like to start off with smaller charges on brand-new accounts however I need to meet the spend requirement to get the bonus so I didn't have time to work my way up.  I appreciate that Amex cards have the ability to 'confirm' charges beforehand like this rather than making you call in.  Smiley Wink
