join the military family's association (or something like that). One time $20 donation on a visa or mastercard...   I joined over the phone, joined penfed and then apped for the cc. you can do it online.  I called because I was hoping for an instant approval... plus, I had tons of questions.

Here's the "how to join" link:

Do they pull hard inq when you join the CU, even though you do not apply for Credit Card or Loan?

Once the membership was established and I received the membership # and input a PIN, the CSR said we would proceed to the CC application.  She said she didn't need to pull the CR because it was pulled with the membership application.  She put my financial info in and said everything was approved.... I asked what it meant.  She said it meant that the CL and CC was approved and she said I had another offer for the car financing...

I was asked what CL I wanted to apply for.  I asked what the maximum cl is on the card.  CSR said $50K.  I said $10K because there is no point in being greedy. lol

I figured that with my 799 FICO, 10K was an good number.  I wanted instant approval.

Re: Spreading the PENFED FEVER!

Which CRA do they pull? I have too many inqs on my EX. I am going to wait another 12 months before I apply for any thing.

Yes, they do. It's good for up to 60 days, though, so if you think that you will go ahead and app for card, loan, etc., that inq should cover, as long as it's within the time period.

I thought that I could join the military fam assn and then PenFed later, but the military fam application is also the PenFed app, and that's when you get the hard inq. So it's not like you can creep up on it.

I joined specifically to get the 5% cashback on pay-at-the-pump and 2% groceries ("supermarkets", not Sam's club, not Superwalmart, etc), 1.25% everything else, and I had pitiful thoughts about maybe the car loan one day. I was quite delighted to get them both.

edit: they pull EQ only. I asked for (and got) $5K, because this is going to be our everyday expenses PIF'er, and I don't need any more. I had a 728. Still stunned, because of all my lates, but they seemed to like the really low util, etc.

* Credit is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master. * Who's the boss --you or your credit?

They pulled Equifax.
I'm thrilled with this membership.  The cc is great.  But I'm happy to see that they offer competitive rates on many products.  Seems like a great company.  CSR was very nice.

Re: Spreading the PENFED FEVER!

BTW, I hope that everyone who does app enters their info in WhoGaveMeCredit. There are around 5 different entries for PenFed (wish they'd clean that sort of thing up.) I used the first listing of Pentagon FCU, which was maybe 3rd in the clump of variations on the name. (so not Penfed, PenFed, etc)

Re: Spreading the PENFED FEVER!

I just join them and got a account number and pin and app for that visa 5% back on pay at the pump...
The CSR told me to call back tomorrow and check on the status of my app. I'm keeping my fingers cross. I hope they pull EQ because EX and TU has way too much Ing. Smiley Happy
