Still trying to work on my "problem"

Quick review: Need to payoff 8K Providian (at almost 18%). Just recently applied and approved for:

Juniper Sea Miles, 3K, 0% 6 mos, then 20.24%
Barnes & Noble, 2K, 18.24% (no intro)
WaMu, 8K, 0% 6 mos, then 12.74% (cannot be used to pay Providian b/c same bank)
And for DH, Barclay's U.S. Airways, 3K, 0% 6 mos, then 20.24%

The scores I know are: EQ 665, EX 624 and for DH, TU 689, EQ 668. We were also declined for CCCU (they pulled EX). We had a Ch. 7 discharged 06/01.

From least to most important, the accts we are trying to payoff/BT are (bal/CL):
AT&T, 3300/3400
Cap One, 4800/5000
Cap One (DH), 4800/5000
Kohl's, 645/2000
Providian (DH), 8000/10000

I am trying to keep things as simple as possible but with some of those lower limits, it means breaking things up into so many pieces. Smiley Sad

I had the bright idea that maybe Cap One would do a CLI (so I could use that for Providian after paying off Cap One with WaMu). But I just got off the backdoor number (9939) and they gave me the 7-10 days. We've been with them for 4 years and never asked for or rec'd a CLI.

Re: Still trying to work on my "problem"

OOPS! Submitted before I was quite done. Should I apply for another Cap One? I know some posters think its easier to get another card than to get a CLI from them. Also, timber had the great suggestion to use a check from WaMu (whenever that card actually comes!) but our bank treats us like criminals with those kind of checks and puts a hold on the funds forever. So, I consider that my last resort.

All suggestions/advice would be welcome. I am trying to get this all taken care of, especially getting BT in process, before going out of town for a while.

Re: Still trying to work on my "problem"

You are on a treadmill!!  You have $21.5k in balances, you really need to start paying them down.  Opening more accounts with the view to do BT's won't accomplish much in the long run.  BT's are handy as a one shot deal if you can get a low interest rate for the period you need to pay them off.  And then diligently working the balance down.  Develop a plan for paydown and stick with it.

Re: Still trying to work on my "problem"

I agree with you that our balances are high. We are working on it and part of that is making what we have go further by not paying so much in finance charges. And, truthfully, I think we've "gone as far as we can" with these accts. They are never willing to reduce rates or do CLI. I won't close them but I need to create other options.

Also, because of the BK, for a VERY long time we've just had these accounts and not ever been able to earn any rewards. Now, with the Sea Miles and U.S. Airways, we can charge things like gas and groceries and PIF and start working toward some great rewards.

Re: Still trying to work on my "problem"

you say you have gone as far as you can with these accounts, but i would bet the house as soon as you pay them off, they will treat you to a nice CLI and lower rates!
www.whatsthecost.com is a great snowball calculator to show you what and where to pay first to accomplish the most

Re: Still trying to work on my "problem"

Creditaddict, does it matter that the website you suggest uses pounds instead of dollars. That may be a silly question. Sorry. Smiley Indifferent

BTW, I feel like how the food arrives at a restaurant only once you've left the table to go to the bathroom! That is, my WaMu cards arrived today! No BT checks but I was able to activate and setup OL access and see my TU is 674. That's the best of the 3! I so want to see 700's again. Maybe by next Summer?

Re: Still trying to work on my "problem"

I sure hope that you are right about how Cap One will treat us. Since the new cards came in today, I took care of what I think is the best scenario I could come up with. My Cap One and more than half of DH's are now transferred and the AT & T and Kohl's are transferred and zeroed out. So, I am down to that $%#@ Providian card and some of DH's Cap One at high rates.

So, if Cap One would do a generous CLI and offer a good BT or if Cap One just has a good BT offer and AT&T does too, we'll be set. Not holding my breath. Smiley Sad

Should I try a recon with CCCU? If so, what should I say? I cannot argue we have high revolving balances and now we have 4 new accounts between us. (The upside is that dropped our utilization from about 73% to 50%.)

Re: Still trying to work on my "problem"

Anyone have an opinion on whether a CCCU recon is worth a try?
