That’s a bit of an overstatement. Some store cards provide great value to the users, far and above what a major card can provide in some cases.  Certainly you don’t want to overload on them but there’s no reason to completely ‘avoid’ them.  As for app sprees, again you can’t make generalizations.  If done in moderation an app sprees has some value with all the accounts aging at the same as opposed to spreading them out.

Re: Store Cards don't count towards 5/24???

During my daughter's approval recon on the Chase Freedom CC in March 2017, Chase overlooked the AU cards as well as the 2 store cards that were on her reports, only counting the 2 CCs that were hers. They were hesitant to approve such a thin file, but did. So, her experience was auto denial due to thin file (9 month oldest acct), but re-conned and approved. The rep even stated to her that the AU and store cards were excluded.

Re: Store Cards don't count towards 5/24???

As far as store cards go, if I had planned longer term I wouldn't have gotten Walmart or Target, but I don't regret Kohl's or Victoria's Secret.

I've had Kohl's for about 18 months now, and yes the limit is low, but the savings I've received with it (anniversary free $, Birthday Free $, and Kohl's Charge exclusive coupons) have exceeded $200 so far and they'll continue for years.

For Victoria's Secret with their freebies, rewards, Birthday offers, and so much more I've gotten so much back in value that has exceeded a normal credit card, so I definitely don't regret it.

I do regret Walmart because all I got was $75-$100 one time, and the ongoing rewards are terrible. The only good thing about it is because the limit is so high it provides a buffer.

I do regret Target, because although I do get 5% off with it, that excludes Gift Cards which major creditors do not, and they have a debit card version which has all the same functions.

Also, can you guys confirm that Chase Business Cards do not count towards 5/24? Just want to double check.

Re: Store Cards don't count towards 5/24???

I completely agree with Irish 80. Certain store cards can be as valuable or more valuable than some ofc the majors. Case in point I have a Kohls, Target and Amazon card that I save hundreds of dollars using every year. 5%+ return is not bad. Wife has a Gap Visa and Ulta MC that she loves. I have closed a lot of store cards that I simply did not use enough such as Nordstroms JC Penny's Cabelas Sears and Zales.

Just get your Chase Saphire and Chase Southwest cards first.  You can still get Chase Hyatt and British Airways no matter how many cards you have.  I have 3 Chase Cards and have 22 Cards total in one year.

Well, much the same caveats apply to any card!   So for example, if I shop at a store that has a good store card (and I agree many don't), that's going to be a better deal than say a Chase British Airways "major" credit card, if I never fly at all.    Choose the card that gives you the most "rewards" (defined as you wish) whether it is a store or a bank card.

Generally, all revolving accounts will count. Any credit profile with above 5 cards in 24 months will auto-decline on 5/24 specific Chase cards (unless there’s some type of pre-approval involved). Reconning is mostly fruitless, however, some profiles/applicants may get lucky with underwriters.

If under 5/24, app with Chase first. If over, you may be burning an inquiry as YMMV with recon. Almost all data points involving recon post 5/24 are more than a year old. Since then Chase has tightened up, their Rewards Abuse Team reviews auto accounts and manual accounts, and they’ve made their Sapphire cards less churnable.
