Student CCs

Hey! I'm new to these forums, but I just applied and was approved very quickly for the Discover It for Students. I was shocked as I am only 18 and have no previous credit history and very small income. The only thing I have going for me is that I'm an AU on parent's Amex Platinum, Amex Skymiles Gold, and Macy's store cards.

But my question is that if I should apply for another student card, like the Bankamericard or Cap1 Journey. I would really like to have a Visa card as I only have Amex, and now Discover. I'm a little unsure whether I would get approved though, and I don't want a negative inquiry

Welcome to the forum

Congrats on your new card

There's no way to say yes or no to an approval just like when you applied for the Discover you entered your info and clicked submit the good news is it was an approval..Yay

Just be aware that Cap 1 will pull a CR from each bureau for a total of 3 HP's

Citi also has a student CC you may want to look at them as well.

Good luck should you apply and treat your cards well and your credit profile will grow and become an asset to you for years to come.

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?

Welcome to the forum! Congrats on your approval and welcome to the Discover Family!
I agree with myjourneym, cap 1 pulls all 3 bureaus and there might be other cc's with better rewards. Citi Forward is excellent.

Do you go to college? If so, is it a 4 year university? When I called Discover a few weeks ago, I asked them why my APR is so high even though I have good credit. The reason is because I applied for Discover IT Student, and that they did not look for my credit history and income as the main basis to approve me, but rather my academic history. When I first applied to Discover last year, I was still a community college student and got declined because they only accept 4 year universities for their application.

EDIT: Oh and what they said ^^^

Re: Student CCs

Yeah I go to a 4 year college. Part of the app asked me to upload an official school correspondence, and I found a really good one I have that even had the last 4 of my ssn on it. I literally checked back on their system within 2 hours and I was approved.

But my worry is that most other apps are not as user friendly as discover. I have looked at the ones for Citi and BOA, and they are a big daunting! My primary question right now: do you include scholarship money as income? Right now, my income is about $2k from a PT job and $5k from parental allowances (transferring money to my personal checking each month). But if I included scholarship, which would be very easy to verify as it is the official document that I provided to Discover, my "income" would be quite substantial, considering I go to a private university. I have read on other sites that you should include scholarships and grant monies received as income, but I just want to be sure. Could you please answer this for me? And also I've read the line "why would you want to do that to be able to go into debt further?" But please, my intention in applying for a card like the Forward is to have it sit in my drawer and pull it out every once in a while to buy some lunch with it or something just so it looks like I'm using it and paying it down every month to build my score and history. If I need to make a large purchase, I have the money in savings. I'm very aware of the dangers (and rewards) of credit.

Also, I am more drawn to the BOA cards. I want just a classic "platinum"-like card, like the standard Bankamericard. I don't want to/nor do I get to excited by all these rewards cards because what can you really earn? As a college student, maybe ~$25 a year? As an adult with high income and credit (like my parents), maybe ~$500 a year? A nice gift card somewhere? To me, rewards cards aren't worth the effort because, after all, if you qualify for some really high end card with some great limit, then you most likely don't need the points. But, as my parents do have Amex Platinum, I am very aware of the exceptional services that those cards provide. And the free bags with the Skymiles card is amazing! I can't wait 'till I'm able to get a Skymiles or United Explore etc for myself some day just so I can get those added perks on those cards.

I have a BoA card and their main selling point is the rewards structure.  If you just get the regular platinum with no rewards, there's nothing special about it and every time you want a CLI you have to take a hard pull (and they don't auto-CLI).  In your situation, I would recommend getting a platinum card from a credit union.  Credit unions are forbidden by law to charge more than 18% interest and you'd probably have an easier time getting accepted.

As a college student myself, I did include income from odd jobs, scholarship, PT job, financial aid, and help from family on most of my current CC apps. It is a gray area, and things could go different ways. One thing I noticed when I app'd for CCs is the disclaimer that "you do no need to disclose any other income such as child support, etc unless you want those to be considered on your application." In my humble opinion, having a lot of CCs as soon as you can will benefit you in the future, kind of like a stock porfolio. Of course just don't use the CC like a typical college student who maxes out their CCs, but I trust you. Smiley Very Happy

Actually, rewards do add up if you use it right with the rest of your rewards card, which could be enough to buy gifts for Christmas. Smiley Wink
If most of expenses are paid by your parents, then you're right. But if you're like me who pay for everything, then racking up points won't be that hard.
