I would have them go for a standard card. I do not feel that it has been shown that student cards are easier to get, however it has been reported that they do not grow the same. As others have said the "Discover" is a good first card. If they have a checking/savings with a CU or Bank that is also a good institution for a first card.

I would suggest starting them both out with a Discover It or other similar card.
**I also feel obligated by Jesus to suggest the AMEX Everyday as well if they prefer a more versatile rewards program over straight cash back.
LOL... well-played by our resident former Amex employee! ![]()
P.S. Thanks for continuing to field our Amex questions and concerns around here. ![]()
My Discover It Student was my first credit card...so I may be a little bit biased! Lol
I do recommend this card with all my heart. The 5% cashback is something that I actually use (right now it’s grocery stores, but my favorite categories is the Amazon/Target one). I adore the Cashback Match. The Good Grades Reward is easy money! And I have found use with the Discover Deals (10% back when I bought my iPhone was killer!)
I have no doubt they will be approved with a 750 (I was approved for $500 with a 649 and no revolving history).
I know you’re concerned about it being a student card, but the only thing “student” about it is the good grades program, other than that it’s just a regular Discover It.
So with that, I do fully recommend this card for fellow students!
