PNC cash rewards card is one of the best. If you look for and find a 5% cash back card year round, make sure you aren't paying the 1% difference (or more) over 4% by requiring you to jump through some hoops to get it (such as requiring a membership fee paid to an organization). PNC cash rewards card has no hoops.

That's a nice Propel special offer so congrats on that!  But OP was looking on long-term cards that have best regular rate on gas, not just by special limited-time offers.

Smiley Indifferent ?  I assume by membership fee you are referring to one of the warehouse clubs like Sam's or Costco?  Many of us would pay those fees regardless because of the overall value we find there, and that definitely applies to my Costco membership.  I would never recommend someone pay for a Costco membership SOLELY for purposes of getting a Costco Visa card and getting 4% back on gas.  That makes no sense!  However, when combined with other benefits of the membership, it just adds to the value.  The same for the Chase Sapphire Reserve/Freedom combination I mentioned.  I get great value from my Chase Sapphire Reserve overall, regardless of the 7.5% back in one quarter on gasoline.  Again, that is just a side benefit included with many others of the overall value of the card.

As with any membership or card fees, YMMV and it always pays to check your personal valuation.  However, paying fees is not just for suckers.  Sometimes, paying fees for added value is a just smart business.

Yeah, that's why I didn't include Chase or DISCOVER rotating categories, because they aren't year round. Propel at 13% is not an option either as it was a one time deal.

Any annual fee that cannot be recouped with spend is one example of a membership fee. So is a Ducks Unlimited card that requires any reoccurring fee to a cause that one would not usually pay but does in order to get 5% on gas, unless of course that fee can be recouped by heavy use of the 5% card that still exceeds 4% after adding in any membership fee.

More work,  but maybe applicable to some .   Get the Cash card (Square) and once a week use the supermarket boost (10% off any supermarket up to $75) and buy gas cards.   Obviously only useful if your supermarket does sell gas cards for the brand(s) you use, but 10% off the top is hard to beat.   (And you can do even a little better depending what debit you use to load the cash card)

Of course, this is also good for straight supermarket purchases, better than BCP for some.

Does Abound Platinum Visa get 5% only if you swipe the card at the pump station? or it also gets 5% for any purchase at the attached convenience store?

Copied and pasted:

All rebates will not be shown at the time of purchase, but will appear on your monthly billing statement. 5% off fuel purchases paid at the pump
