I figure most are probably the co-brand or store cards.  A lot look like junk cards.  I stay away from those.

Right, but junk for one person isn't for another, and in fact the OP's Amazon, VZW and Lowes are all good co-branded cards.  And the PPMC is another example of at least "very good in class" card from Sync.

The advice by @Remedios was right (and really for most issuers), don't deviate too much from a normal user and demand too much attention.

@xenon3030 That didnt help the OP's question. Thats your choice. I have 2 and they get used and paid each month @increasingmyfico . It can happen with any lender with CLD or any other type of AA. Not always closures. Spread them out. I did quit asking for CLI's. Dont want to poke the bear.

I think it was responsive. OP wanted to know how many is too many. And @xenon3030 responded that even one is too many.

Which would fall under sarcasm, which is not helping OP at all.

Member who responded with "none" has no synch cards, has no negative experiences with them, and fell for same old "They closed my cards for no reason. I don't understand why, I wasn't even using them, how can I be a risk??????"

Or "I know my utilization is 90%, but I only have 5 maxed cards while taking advantage of 0% promos, and I only had 7 maxed cards last year while taking advantage of different 0% promos!!!"  Ummm, TD anyone???

This type of answer completely ignores reality, it's a strong personal opinion about something one has no experience with, so if we follow this logic, any question could be answered with "none" and call that being helpful. It is not.

I have 0 Synchrony cards, they have nothing I'm interested in, that doesn't mean I get to reflect the world through my eyes and my wallet. If OP didn't want these cards, they wouldn't preemptively ask questions before blindly jumping in then asking questions when something goes wrong.

I don't personally mind sarcasm, I speak that language fluently but not to those who are actually putting some thought into their actions. They deserve better than "junk", "none", "beware"

Re: Sync- How many cards is too many?

Sync closed my Amazon card without reason and only after 6 months. While they have the right to do CLD or close cards as they want, it creates discrepancy in the customer's planning, and not sure whether they identify real financial risks. This is possibly due to using old models, old credit monitoring methods or old financial risk assessment tools.

Anyway, I prefer to pay with cash instead of using their CC Smiley Happy

Re: Sync- How many cards is too many?

Synchrony - One card is probably too many. I've had two in the past during different times, and each time they have closed my account for no reason that I could devise. First time with Amazon, I had just finished paying it off and the next time I went to use it, transaction was declined and I couldn't sign into my account. Never even got a letter, didn't find out it had been closed until I called. They re-enabled my account access which let me save my account statements where I confirmed I only had one payment a few days late in the entire few years of having the account.

They did it again with Lowes, while I didn't use it much, I had used it for a few appliances purchases in the past and every few months for the 5% off. At least I got a letter that time with whatever minor reasons they chose to close that account.

So now I have got several pre-approval offers for their cards in the mail and online. AAA stands out since it's 5% cash back on gas and they are offering a $200 opening bonus. Tempted to get it, use the card long enough to collect the $200, then close it before they have the chance to close it on me. But I feel like the smarter move is just not to do business with them anymore.

Re: Sync- How many cards is too many?

They have treated me very well (knock on wood).

I pushed hard at the start for CLIs, etc, but no longer ask for any as I am pretty maxed out for normal limits for each type of card.  I have $70k available between 4 cards (Premier MC, Lowe's, Amazon, PayPal).

Like most things, the review ratio will be more negative than reality on average.

OP - I would get the card you want most first, use it, pay it.

Then rinse and repeat with 6 months between each.

@Remedios: Not sure how you concluded these, sarcasm or other critical issues that you are raising, as they are offensive and I am hearing here for the first time. As we see, several people had issues with Sync on CLD or CC closure without notice. I provided my opinion, based on my CC closure with Sync without a prior notice, and it is up to the OP to take a decision, based on the opinions of others. If you think that the people need to follow your method to write long essays to provide a detailed, very clear, logical and academic stories to support their opinion, several people including me do not have such time to spend in this or any other forum.

Anyway, they definitely have the right to do CLD or close CC with or without notice. In case that such issue happens in a difficult financial time, it may trigger a "domino effect" by the other lenders. So, I personally do not take a risk to get another Sync card.

@nbnsraz  The AAA card is with Comenity, not Synchrony. It's a good card. There are 2 varieties, the Daily Advantage and the Travel Advantage.

I've had a few Synchrony cards at one point or another without incident. But I do read. And there are many, many reports of their bad behavior in this forum.  So I know that Synchrony has 2 major flaws: (a) unpredictable account closings and (b) unpredictable reporting of balances to bureaus.
