Re: THIN file

I would hold off on anymore apps. If Capital One gets approved, that would be good. I would wait until after 6 months of payment history report, then I would think about another card.

In the event that none of them get approved, I get a secured credit builder loan simply to add a credit line with positive credit history. After it reports paid in full on your CR's, look at Cap1 for a preapproval or even your bank or credit unioin.

Take the AMEX and Barclay declines as indications the current available apps have been exhausted.

Capital One and Discover will be fine.

What do you mean "pending some docs" ? Thin file, or some other issues going on?

Which card account is currently in the wallet? You don't mention a bank for that.

I am with the other commenters. This cardholder, since they are going from one account to three, has to stop apping now. Has to stop apping now, just to repeat that. They need to work with Capital One and Discover, and whoever that other bank is, and get experience with three accounts before going any farther.

No more apping.

Are those listed in the same order as they applied or are you alphabetizing? Overall Barclaycard is a tough issuer and thin files can sometimes be problematic. If they were app 3 or 4 though I can guarantee that the inquiries killed them. Amex also is similar to Barclaycard where if they are 3 or 4 then they have to say no. Cap1 and Discover like to verify people if their credit file is thin so not surprising that they wanted some minor documents.I just recently got a Discover and have a huge file and they still wanted documents.

I overall recommend that they stop applying now as their file now has tanked with the new accounts and account age needs to grow. Thin files get a bigger ding per account. Citi will be turned away by seeing 4 inquiries on the file. BoA might be lenient but probably will limit them to secured or a low SL since their score is more volatile and is probably in the mid-low 600's by now.

My advice: friend should not apply for any other new cards. Just follow through on documentation, get Cap One and Discover, and use them well for at least 6 months before applying for anything.

Re: THIN file

Sorry here is complete list and this stems from a sudden divorce is why the need for credit in a big short term hurry:

Capital One - Pending, Next day they emailed for copy of social security card (trying to locate)USAA - Declined (opened new checking account and started credit monitoring)

USAA - Declined (opened new checking account and started credit monitoring)

1 Account reporting (credit one, I believe 11 months) $1k balance on $1150 limit

1 inq.

low 700 score.

Amex Blue - Decline

Amex Gold Charge - Decline

Discover - "call us" Approved $1500 pending social and address verification. (so far not accepting the address verification as bank accounts were just changed address... I sent last months statement showing account number but old address and then screen shot the home screen with account number and new address listed... they said the screen shot didn't have a date! I'm working on that but again need to find the social card anyway (Monday!)

Barclay - pending... Called... Declined... Recon... Perfect pay history but only 1 card.. "why 1 card when you say you have worked for 7 years" (didn't realize how important credit was until now... blah blah blah... sorry we want to see a few more accounts before we will approve! UGH I just hate barclay... they hate new accounts but don't like to few... whatever.

Applied for Navy Membership (pending) If navy goes through then I wouldn't have him apply elsewhere and take navy, cap1, discover and CLOSE Credit One and BT.

Otherwise, Might try Citi as I feel like they give cards out to no score many times.

Re: THIN file

It won't be enough history for Citi, the 2 recent inquiries will have negligible impact.

Synchrony store card (ONE) or a Macy's card will help build some history and probably an easy approval.

Who does your friend Bank with?
