Take the AMEX Platinum Plunge?

Would love opinions on whether I should apply for the AMEX Platinum card. I've been offered 175,000 MR SUB with 8k spend in 6m. From what I've read, it's a really good offer for a personal card. I have no doubt I can spend to get SUB. I've read all about the benefits and think they'd work with my spending/use habits.  I'm curious about others thoughts about how'd they'd maximize benefits from this card/coupon book. Also I've read mixed things about the NPSL. Anything I should be aware of? I usually PIF all my cards except 1. I'd use the SUB for travel, probably through transferring to an airline.

Context: long time AMEX card holder. FICO score 850. Currently have the Platinum Delta Skymiles (since Feb 2024, got 90,000 Skymiles SUB), Everyday, Blue Cash Everyday from AMEX. I have a bunch of other cards, including 5 with Chase. My other travel card is Chase Sapphire Preferred.

1.  The annual fee is huge.

2.  It's a lot of work to try to maximize the value with the little coupon credits.

3.  IMHO unless you do a lot of air travel, it's not worth it.

Sounds like you know what you're doing, will be approved, and feel you will get your money's worth out of it. I don't see why not? NPSL issues shouldn't come up for you based on your profile.

The only thing is to make sure that's the SUB you want due to the "once per lifetime" rule. Otherwise, go ahead and pull the trigger.

I find it worth it just for the lounge access and the Walmart+/digital credits (Walmart+ also giving me additional streaming). I have a stock pile of Saks gift cards.

I may cancel my Plat once the Chase Sapphire Lounge (Ritz card will provide access) finally opens at my local airport, but until it does there is enough household travel to merit the Platinum.

Re: Take the AMEX Platinum Plunge?

Just keep in mind you need to keep it likely for 2 years of AF's or will likely be put in Amex sub jail for future card.  The AF isn't worth it for many as the card is a huge coupon book but for some others it is worth it if they value lounge access and other stuff.  I find the CSP and Ritz and other cards as better travel cards personally but each has different spend.  I would not get the card for the sub alone as mentioned you would be spending 1400 on AF over two years but if can use and plan on making it a keeper then by all means go for it.

only thought I have is that going for the Platinum first makes it pretty unlikely that Amex will give you the SUB for the Gold if you wanted that card later on, but if you go for the Gold card first, you should (hopefully) be able to get the Platinum SUB as well

Re: Take the AMEX Platinum Plunge?

Since you are already deep into the Amex ecosystem, an application for Platinum is likely to not result in a hard inquiry.  It also wouldn't be impacted by your aggregate total Amex credit limits since it is not a revolving card product.  Being a NPSL, and not counting as a revolving product for FICO scoring, spikes in spending on Platinum will not affect utilization or total revolving balance numbers.  Many people with high spend can benefit from this NPSL feature.

Since you hold a Delta Platinum card, I have to assume that you value Delta as an airline.  The Amex Platinum charge card will give you a limited number of Delta lounge entries (15, I think, per year).  Membership Rewards points are also easily combined with Delta Skymiles.

As for whether or not it's worthwhile for you to submit an application, the 175k point SUB is very generous and would cover more than two years of annual fees.  As mentioned earlier by @CreditCuriosity , keeping the card past the first year is a wise strategy to avoid attention from the Amex RAT (rewards abuse team).  If you value your relationship with Amex, steer clear of the RAT.

The coupon book aggravates many on this forum.  I am one of the few who openly appreciates the value of the coupon book.  Last year, I cleared almost $400 worth of benefits after accounting for the annual fees for myself and Player 2.  Examples of credits I easily use are:  $199 for Clear, $200 every few years for Global Entry, $240 for digital entertainment, $98 (the annual price) for Walmart+, $60 (the annual price) for Paramount+ which is a benefit of having Walmart+, airport lounge access (my value of $15 per use), Hilton/Marriott Gold status and the corresponding Hilton food & beverage credit (my value of $10-$15 per guest per night).  I occasionally use the Uber and Saks credits, but those are very hit or miss for me.  I also use quite a few Amex offers, but that likely won't provide you with much additional value since you can probably access the same offers via one of your other Amex cards.

Edit to add:  When I lived in the NYC area, I often used the Amex Preferred Seating benefit to snag great seats at local entertainment venues.  I'm not sure if you are based in a city where that would be of use.

Re: Take the AMEX Platinum Plunge?

Thanks. I just did the math and will come out ahead based in current spending.

My understanding of the once per lifetime is that if I get this SUB I couldn't get the SUB for gold or green card right? That the Delta Platinum SUB won't disqualify me for it? I have no interest in the gold card and the green card seems a bit useless.

Re: Take the AMEX Platinum Plunge?

Personally for me, the only AMEX Platinum level card that I can justify is the Hilton Aspire, but if you can justify the normal Plat then go for it.

also consider looking for the highest possible offer ~175k points for the platinum, load the page in different configurations to hopefully find it (phone/computer, wifi, mobile internet, tablet, different browsers, private browsing etc.)

there's also the public resy amex offer which is 100k + 10x points on $25k restaurant spend in the first 6 months
