So I just got my AA card 2 weeks ago w/50k signup bonus and I'm planning
to book a trip as soon as my 50k miles post to my AA account. When I log
into my Advantage on AA site, it shows my miles and acknowledges I'm a
Citi AAdvantage CC Card holder. Reading the terms of the Check bag &
Group 1 boarding , it's not clear how to use this benifit.
if I book my entire trip using miles , will I get the free check bag and group 1 boarding
as my advantage # is tied in to my Citi CC ? Or must I pay using my CC to benifit
from this ?
Or
can/do I use miles + CC to pay for booking so I can get the free bag check & boarding ?
any info will help me as I don't want to mess any of this up. Thanks in advance for the advice.
wish they would clarify this more in details in the Terms. Because all it really says is as longs the CC
is open 7 days before booking and the advantage # is on the booking.

I actually used my my bonus miles last week to book a trip next week. From what I was able to see you either have to have all the miles to pay for the trip with them. You can't pay the rest with a cc. This is where I think the Delta amex has the edge because you can use your miles and CC pay the rest. Now you can buy AA miles to cover the rest but didn't really see any benifit in that might have to look it over again. All in all I used 45k miles round trip and they gave me an extra 5k mile bonus for redeming my miles.
Maybe someone that has used it more can tell you about the group 1 boarding stuff.
The free checked bag perk is linked to your AAdvantage #, not your method of payment.
Group 1 boarding doesn't mean much if a flight has a lot of elites and families on it. Group 1 is like the 8th group to board.
Okay thanks. I'm Guessing your not concerned about check bags on your trip huh ?
My first flight (and even with the the 50k bonus that just posted last week, wasn't going to be enough to cover it) is next month, it will be the first sincre I got the AAdvantage card, and my first AA flight in about 20 years. I am looking forward to free checked baggage, and hoping for an upgrade. I'll check back in afterwards, and let everyone kknow how that goes.
On a side note, I just signed up for Global Assist, which is basically TSA Pre-Check and TSA Pre-Check for US Customs. I'm in background check right now, but I am hoping it is complete before my next trip, because it definitely sounds like it's worth the $20 a year ($100/5 years). I'll try to post in Smorgasboard how that all goes.

Yes, you can use any card. You can pay money or with AA miles. You can even book an American-operated flight with a partner's award currency (like Avios).
As long as you get that AA number on, the benefit applies. Just be aware of the other restrictions (like it has to be a domestic flight).

To answer your question about group 1 boarding; there are so many categories of pre-boarding with AA it's not really a benefit to board with group 1 any more. As others pointed out you get the free checked bag regardless of form of payment.
So in this case, I may go app the AA store card then !!!!
