Thinking about closing two cards. Thoughts?

So I just looked over all my cards and there's two cards I been thinking about closing. The first is my sportsman guide visa. It only has a 1500 credit limit and honestly it's the biggest mistake for an app iv made. Definetly pretty useless and it's only been open 3 months. The second is my QS1 which was my first card so oldest current trade line. It has a 19 dollar annual fee and I feel the double cash is superior right now. What are your guys thoughts? I'm pretty set on closing the sportsman visa currently for sure.

If a card is no longer useful, then you should close it. Have you contacted Cap 1 to get your AF permanently waived or for an upgrade?

You've got some really nice cards, so there's definitely no reason to keep the 'dead weight' around!

If it were me, I would cut the Sportsman's Guide Visa for sure... you've got much better, and unless you're a huge Sportsman's Guide shopper and the card has value in that way there's simply no reason to keep it around.

As for the QS1, you have a couple of options.  Just like you, my own QS1 was one of my oldest cards, and a couple of months ago I was able to get it upgraded to a no-AF Quicksilver MasterCard after being repeatedly told there was 'no offer available'.  You could try to have it PC'd, and if they continue to give you the 'no offer' schtick you could cancel it before the next AF comes around.  Or, you could simply cancel it now, and be done with it.  For me, the AF was the 'deal-breaker' - had they not given me the PC before the AF hit in July, I was planning on letting it go, but with no AF there's no reason to get rid of an old trade line.

Granted, there would be no immediate AAoA impact either way, but I plan to keep my three oldest cards around for as long as possible (I have three cards that 'survived' my financial meltdown back in the mid-2000s, and they are quite a bit older than the rest).

That's just my 2¢, though... in this case I would actually be supportive no matter what you decide!  Smiley Wink

Feel free to close them if you want. As above posters said, you could potentially product change your Quicksilver One to a regular no-fee Quicksilver. But you're correct that the Double Cash can make the QS1 unneeded, especially if the Double Cash has a higher credit limit. Since closed cards stay on your credit report for 10 years, your QS1 would still be helping your average age of accounts through 2026 if you closed it now, so there's no problems on that front.

If I could product change it to a QS with no annual fee that would definetly be awesome. But I doubt they would let me with a 2750 limit. It was converted from a platnium. The sportsman visa I may wait until the 6 month mark to close it. Don't feel like dealing much with comenity down the line since it seems people have trouble with visas the most.

I hear ya on Comenity... they just don't seem worth it to me, either.

Don't be discouraged with your QS1... my own started as a lowly HSBC/Orchard bank 'Platinum' MasterCard, and had a $79 (!) annual fee.  The best I could ever get them to do was to waive half of it, but even that got old... I was determined that last year would be the last time I paid the fee, and that this year it would either be PC'd or I would simply close it (and move the CL to my QS Visa).  I was quite happy (and surprised!) when I made my 'routine' chat request and there was finally an offer.

If you want to read about my own PC, here's the link to the thread:

If your AF isn't due right away, it's at least worth a shot... just remember that I was told 'no' numerous times before finally being told 'yes', so don't be discouraged if there isn't an "offer" available right away.  Of course if your AF is due relatively soon you might have to determine if it's worth it to pay it again.  Also, keep in mind the account combination option - that was actually my own 'back-up plan'.  Smiley Wink

Give the Cap One PC a shot.  If the the standard customer support/retention fails an EO call may be in order for them to retain a long time customer.

Re: Thinking about closing two cards. Thoughts?

I guess I'm confused as to the reasoning for the encouragement for OP to call EO and get the Quicksilver PC'd. Nothing wrong with the suggestion, but OP already has a Double Cash, which pays out more rewards even if you have no fee on your QS. Some just don't like the Double Cash structure (like me) but OP didn't indicate that was a problem. So I'm not sure it's  really worth putting time and energy into getting the QS fee waived when there's not much point in OP using the QS.

But I typically am in the camp that if the card isn't useful, move on and close it. To me, having to email/call the Capital One EO for requests like this, being it's just how they operate, is time you could be spending on something else. Consider also that again, there's not much need for the card for spending.

I'd dump the Capital One and the Sportman's Guide honestly.  The history remains for 10 years so no concern there.

I agree with you regarding the EO emails/phone calls... while I don't judge anybody else who goes that route it's just not for me.

Before I got my own PC that was where I had to "draw the line" as to how much effort I would expend.  Like you mention, it simply didn't mean enough to me to bother with the emails, phone tag, etc. just to keep an old card.

That being said, if it's "low hanging fruit", i.e. a PC is available via chat or a regular CSR I would say 'go for it'.  To me, the easy rewards redemption and account age would be worth keeping it around even with a Citi DC, but that's just my own personal preference.  Smiley Wink

I'm genuinely supportive of either option in this situation.  Smiley Happy

I feel that closing old, rebuilding or starter cards is part of the rebuilding process. At least for me, it felt good to close cards that I was done with.
