Do you really need seven BT cards when you already have...and spend regularly on...several low-APR cards and Blispay?
Any BofA checking/status for 10%-75% more? Expect to add it? If not, maybe the Travel Rewards card can go?
I agree Bucksback can go when you have several other 2% options, and Ring looks of questionable value.
Maybe settle on one daily driver to use unless you have a good reason to depart from it?
Any real use for Citi DP or BuyPower? The non-Travelite FNBO Amex?
Thank you again for your valuable advice! In response to questions: Cash+ I have been trying for some time, albeit unsuccessfully, to get a CLI with on from US Bank, and so it is only used for cell phone and ground transportation category purchases, and I always rapidly PIF afterwards, sometimes more than 1x a month, to avoid unintentional overutilization from occurring.
For the listed BT cards, all of them except Unify regularly offer good 12-18 month 0% Bt offers. The reason I also keep Unify as a BT/other card is because, like Ring, has no BT fees, and also no cash advance fees, plus has the low fixed APR.
I have BoA checking accounts, and IIRC, am eligible for the 10% extra benefit, but my balance is not high enough for more BoA preferred status benefits. The reason I alternate between the BEFCU and PACU cards as the main daily drivers is at present, is because I have a much larger CL with PACU for larger purchases, and PACU has a slightly more-generous rewards program, while BEFCU card has the best overall rate for purchases of my collection, and so would also be useful in case I ever needed to potentially carry a balance for some unforeseen reason. And so essentially atm, BECFU is used for smaller everyday purchases and PACU for larger everyday purchases.
Citi DP has been offering a nice series of promo 5% rewards incentives lately, as well as 0% for purchases promo. BuyPower is largely used for car rental discounts and complimentary upgrades, which I have found to be useful so far. The non-Travelite Amex I will place some occasional spend on from time-to-time to keep it active; also like the large CL, the 1.5% rewards, and the excellent FNBO customer service. At the time I apped and was approved for it, I was unaware of BEFCU and PACU cards, and so it was very useful during that particular time.

@galahad15 wrote:While I am very fond of my collection of ccs, there are things going on in life these days that do not allow me to spend as much time as before on them, and so the current number of cards may have now become too many to try to micromanage on a regular basis. And so I was thinking of possibly closing some cards, if anyone may have any advice please as to what cards they think would make good candidates from closure? (All of my existing cards are in my desktop sig btw.) Putting cards on auto-pay is not also not an option because I need to pay them on a manual schedule to ensure that enough money is in my account to pay any card at any given time. Thoughts?
Here are some potential ideas I had:
Cards that I 100% definitely want to keep: BEFCU VISA, both Unify VISAs, PACU MC, BoA Cash Rewards WMC, Cap1 MC, both BBRs, Cash+, FNBO Travelite, Blispay
Cards that I will probably keep: FNBO Amex (close-you already have Travelite-one really only needs one FNBO card), Citi DC, BoA TR VS (close-you have a fixed rate Cash rewards thiis is a substandard card program), Citi DP VISA (OMG close! I wish I could close mine but its my second oldest account ((almost 19)), Cap1 BuyPower WEMC (do you have a lot of points? If not, close. If so, keep until you redeem for a new car or truck #buyamerican).
Cards potentially on the chopping block: Barclay Ring (irrelevant card, dreadful bank, close), FNBO BucksBack VS (meh), Discover IT (wow, this is unexpected, especially since you do not have a Chase Freedom which is the ultimate overlap card for this-Id keep this puppy)
The cards on the chopping block have overlapping feature with other cards that may have the same features with better interest rates, hence their consideration for being closed. For example, Ring is redundant b/c I have other rewards cards with lower APRs than Ring. Same thing with the BucksBack: I have other comparable rewards cards with better interest rates. Since interest rates are only going to keep going up, the only high-APR cards I am interested in carrying are the ones with the best rewards, and are always PIF. I already closed out my Chase Freedom and Slate earlier this year b/c of unhappiness with their near-30% interest rates.
I am surprised to see you posting this to be honest. You have amassed a great collection of cards. But I totally understand. If I could get ahold of that sexy USAA Limitless card I would be closing quite a few of my redundant cash cards myself.
Thanks for your feedback and advice, and also for the very generous compliments! The BoA Travel Rewards I was hanging onto mostly because if at some future point I am able to have a large-enough account balance to qualify for higher BoA preferred rewards status, hopefully at that time I might be able to make use of the preferred status benefits of up to 2.625% rewards
The Citi DP as I had mentioned in an earlier post is largely being kept b/c Citi has recently been offerring some pretty nice 5% rewards program promos, plus I currently have a 0% on purchases promo with them that is still active.
You raise a great point actually about the Discover IT with the 5% rotating categories, also since as you had helpfully pointed out I no longer have the Chase Freedom card...I may just go ahead and keep this one after all, thanks again for the helpful reminder about its benefits ![]()
Ultimately, if you want to really simplify and put significantly less effort into micromanaging, you're going to have to change your criteria for what it takes to keep something.
By my quick count (and I may have made an error), you have 19 cards from 11 different issuers. Cutting BucksBack and Ring (the only cards you're not providing a reason to keep) would bring you down to 17 cards from 10 issuers. I wouldn't call that a big change, but maybe you're not looking for a big change.
I have 12 cards, but they're spread across only 5 logins, and I rarely use Arrival so it's more like 4.
I suggest you close those two and then see if you want to simplify further in a few months.
I think its great you are looking at doing some pruning. I am as well. I would definitely not close the FNBO amex...well...just because!
I really cant think of anything that sticks out like a sore thumb. Hopefully you bank with a credit union and can set everything up to pay from their interface, that is what I do.
I remember our discussions in the past, I think you said you did have a decent amount of points on the buypower...if not, close it. US Bank...who cares about the limit, its about the rewards.
I really would hate to see you close discover, especially since you have a greate APR and limit with them, and it will only get better with time.
Did you look into changing your citi diamond preferred into a dividend? Maybe that would better suit you? Congrats on the 20k CL on the PACU 7.5F...that is solid stuff right there.
Maybe look into a spreadsheet and some organizational tools if you are feeling a little overwhelmed on things? Again, my credit union makes it easy, they can even import billing, which I don't do, but its pretty easy to just push payments from their interface before statement cut date.....

I didn't even realize that was a possibility! Just Googled around, and I think I'll make this my plan for my own Diamond Preferred after I pay the balance transfer off. Thanks!

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions jfriend! No worries lol, FNBO Amex and Discover I will be keeping and they are safe from being closed out
I did think a lot about potentially closing out the BuyPower card, although the last time I used it for car rental services, I got what I considered to be at the time a very generous rental upgrade and excellent discount on the rental I ended up using; I guess that's the only reason I am a bit reluctant to close it out atm?
On PC'ing the Citi DP to a Dividend, yes indeed, I found that possibility to be quite intriguing, and I may in fact try to do that at some point in the future. Citi has been giving a lot of nice promo offers on the DP lately -- I was able to get $50 in cashback over just the past 2 months due to two back-to-back 5% cashback promos on it, as well as an 8 month 0% promo on purchases. Also many thanks for the kind words about the PACU MC CL!
The main reason for my thoughts about closing out some existing cards is mostly b/c I am now trying to go to a lot more regular social events than before (I was formerly something of a big homebody of sorts, lol), and so between work, current ongoing social events and home, I don't have quite as much time as before to giving enough TLC to all of the cards; I'm just a bit worried that one of them might slip through the cracks for example and I might potentially be hit with a first-ever accidental 30-day late
But thanks again for your very thoughtful concern and for the excellent suggestion about looking into organizational tools!
