Been dealing with Cap1 for years, only had a few CLI's. Have multiple cards 20K and above, FICO's are EQ 750, TU 779, Ex 783.......income north of 175k. Closed all Cap1 cards once and re apped several years ago......still stuck @ 7K. Don't use the card much because of this, but even after heavy use for 6 mos they still wouldn't budge. Thinking about axing them again for good. I have the QS and they offered to "upgrade" me to a QS1 or Venture 1. They really love annual fees. Their reason for denial has always been "payments have been too low"......my utilization on all cards is 3-4%
I should have my own data point on this later this month. My unsecured Platinum MC ($3,000 SL) will be hitting its 91-day mark post-approval/activation in a few more days, and my third statement will also be cutting shortly. I'm going to keep my request conservative if I have the option to select an amount; under the current circumstances overall with Cap One I figure my best course is to just accept what I'm given if I'm given anything, even if it's just $100. No sense in poking the bear, especially with my automatic Credit Steps increase coming up later this summer.
Move on. Why take a HP from all 3 bureaus to get a card? Check out Wells Fargo, they have a 1.5% card, so does Chase, so do many other companies. CapOne might be the easiest to get, but it isn't worth whatever hassle pops up later. There are better cards out there which you can match with other cards out there to get a nicer portfolio.
Move along now, nothing here to see. And it really is the truth. I think, even myself, that we get frustrated with CapOne for what they do and want to prove to them their system is flawed, we can beat it, or other excuse to simply get what we deserve from banking with them for so long. However, we forget that this energy is better directed to proving not to them by getting another card with them, but instead to ourselves that we can get better cards out there with better rewards. I went through this and in some ways I regret it. But when I went through it I also had time to let things fall off and age my accounts. I would rather take one HP for a new card now than 3 HPs for any card with them. I know there 3 HP thing is a way to figure out what the worst terms they can offer you are and to insure that if you have a certain score that it hurts all three bureaus scores so you get trapped with them longer.
Do yourself a favor. Pick three cards you want and think you can get and apply for each of them. Chances are that if your score can get you in it will. You will get 3 times the sign up bonuses and 3 cards, or maybe just 2 times and 2 cards, or maybe once and one card. So for three pulls you can a chance at three cards or just one. It becomes your choice in the end, so why not make the best possible choice in first deciding on the best way to choose.....?........
CapOne pushed me away by not giving me increases. Today I have much more than I would have if I hadn't simply stopped trying to fight their system and moved along, because there was nothing to see their.

Was Cap1 your first credit card? When nobody else would give you one....Folks always get mad, hates and talks bad about Cap1 when they don't get CLI's (just like you admitted) or approved for the Venture. Better cards come along because of Cap1...Don't disrespect Cap1 because they didn't give you increases. Obviously they felt you didn't deserve any.

Donny10, agreed 100%. Capital One gives many, many people out there the leg up they need -- that's not debatable. The Capital One formula that has worked for me is to spend spend spend and pay pay pay, and they have rewarded that pattern. In the beginning, with low limits, spend 200-300% of your limit each month (if you can), and make several monthly payments and don't carry a balance. As your limit grows, try to spend over 50% of your limit, but either PIF or close to it and pay down and repeat. If you're averse to paying any sort of interest, you'll need to always PIF. This has worked not just for me, but a few others I know. If you don't show you're reaching your limit, why should they increase it? It's their bank and their logic. It either works for you as a consumer, or it doesn't. My tuppence.

I keep threatening to get rid of my Cap 1 cards for their excuses and lies. No it was not my first CC. I got my first Cap 1 Platinum with a $500 CL, no credit steps, 8 years ago, first CL (auto) of $1000 after 4 years open and it still sits there. 2 years after I had the 1st card Cap 1 sent me another Platinum card-pre approved "beacause you a great customer" with a CL of $750, again no credit steps. I got the first CL on this card in 2 years for $2000 (auto) but before the increase on the 1st card. My daughter was the AU on the 2nd card. Both cards were used but Cap 1 made it difficult by doing a fraud check on every purchase. They didn't get mine every time but 9 of 10. The AU card had a fraud alert every time. Their excuse-it was for my security, it was being used in a different state than the billing address, I had told them that first, She and I would constantly have purchases declined and I would have to call Cap 1, who insisted it didn't happen that often. I started calling before either of us made a purchase, which they said wasn't necessary, but the fraud checks stopped after this. Every time Iried for a CL I got reasons like lack of use, not enough payment history, enough available credit on other cards, card isn't eligible, etc. Shortly after the 2nd card renewed Cap 1 PCd it to QS1 without my permission and told me I could not decline it. All that changed was getting 1.5% cash back. I have a 3rd card with a $500 CL. It was bought from HBSC. It took almost 3 years to transition and during that time CAP 1 would send me letters not to use the card. I lost auto CLIs that were promised, I lost cash rewards because I could,n't get them high enough to redeem because the card was declined a lot. The CAP 1 EO told me that card would never get a CLI. I called last week to find out if my cards were ever going to get increasesor should I just close the accounts. The rep told me I had never asked for a CLI, told me the 2 I had received 4 years ago on 2 different cards, but wouldn't say anything about the 3rd card. I've had problems I haven't mentioned, but they've never given the reason of inquiries, late payments (i don't have any) or utilization as a reason for denying a CLI, just anything internal they can think up

+1
This is spot-on; I'll only add that it's really not even a matter of them feeling that somebody doesn't deserve a CLI as much as it is they change their algorithm in such a way that prefers some over others (i.e. it isn't personal). Actually, since they leave it completely up to the computer it's really not personal, as in at all (for better or for worse).
While just like everybody else I like my SP CLIs and the last couple of years I had come to expect to get a CLI every six months from Capital One, I'm still not ready to throw them out just yet.
To be fair, my Capital One credit lines are quite usable; my QS Visa I did come close to the credit line recently (for the first time, actually) due to a one-off roof repair that was charged to my AU's card, but for the most part my limits are actually OK where they are... plus I know if I ever decide to I can simply combine my existing cards and I'll have all the limit I could ever need.
Also notable is that of all my cards I chose Capital One for my authorized user... love 'em or hate 'em for their lack of flexibility on APRs and (now) CLIs, they have been rock-solid for me otherwise. When my AU charged $8.3k in a single transaction last month they didn't blink an eye... honestly if that didn't get flagged I'm not sure what would (that transaction was also called in over the phone/card not present... I was actually on 'stand-by' to make a call to a CSR when my Wallet app notified me it was approved; it was a pleasant surprise). They are not the flashiest, but I don't have to worry about them giving me (or my AU) any grief at the point of sale if I happen to be out of state or shopping at a 'weird' hour, which is worth a lot. As I've said before, "it just works".
TL;DR... like everyone else I wish (and hope) they'll loosen back up eventually with CLIs, but I'm not ditching them over it. They have been a solid partner for many years and I like having one of their cards in my wallet. ![]()

You don't request an amount. CapOne offers the highest amount they're willing to give you. At that point, you can accept the offer, accept a lower amount of your choosing, or decline it.
