So if you have GEMB accounts they score you different? Tks Vicki

It's not that they're GEMB, it's that they are retail accounts.

Supposedly FICO gives more weight (points, etc.) to the big four bank cards: Visa, MC, Discover, and AmEx, no matter who issues them. (These are also called major cards.) My guess is that it is because you can get yourself into much more serious trouble with a Visa or whatever, that you can use just about anywhere, than with a Penney's. After you clean out the bedding department and some clothes and the beauty salon, you sort of run out of targets! Smiley Very Happy

But anyway, if GEMB issued any of the four bank cards --and maybe they do, I don't know --those cards would be more beneficial to your credit scores than "just" a Gap or Lowe's or whatever.

Although I could do some serious damage with a Lowe's card! Smiley Wink

I'll look into Discover too. Anyone have a suggestions on a good Citi card and could you give some examples why?

Re: Time to move on up.

It's just my opinion, but I don't think that lenders give a hoot or a holler about what cc's you have, but look at your scores, and your payment history whith your other credit grantors.

I'll bet that I couldn't get an Amex card for the life of me. But I've got a Cap1 Visa with $3,200 cl on it, and a WaMu card with $6,500 cl on it. And that is certainly enough to handle my needs.

I think it is an indirect effect.  The score is dependant on the mix of cards and credit types
The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid

Re: Time to move on up.

illcrew3, what are your other two scores like? A lot of places seem to be pulling EX now, and TU a bit. I read elsewhere that Discover hard inq'd all 3!

And I wouldn't worry so much about the AmEx financial review. Most people who went through it admit they they triggered it by being a bit too bold with CLI requests, running up cards and not paying off reasonably quickly, and so forth. I think it sticks in people's minds because it's so dramatic when it does happen.

I happen to like the idea of a creditor/ bank who will give a good hard yank back on the reins if I'm running wild! Better that than having to start all over again in credit land.

Are you a rower, by the way? That just registered on me when I was typing out your screen name.

Re: Time to move on up.

Well we have other cc's also.  In reply to the citi card I like our citi mastercard, but it doesnt have any reward points, we do get 3 mths 0% financing on purchases over $99 or 0% for 6 mths on purchases over $299.  We also have a BoA Amex, BoA plat, Wamu and my low CL household that I keep thinking of closing but at least it has no AF(I only have the household and BoA plat in my name, im only AU on the others, my hubbys cards). Tks Vicki

Ack! What'd I do? What'd I do? Smiley Surprised (I think our posts hit at the same time.)

Hey, you've got two majors there, the Visa and the WaMu MC (or is it a Visa?) And you don't "have" to have one from all 4 (V / MC / AE / D), just some. I think it's like a Boy Scout trustworthiness badge, or something. It's part of the type of credit mix on the FICO pie chart.

I still wish I could remember where I saw that store cards don't carry as much weight as majors/ bank cards. Other than us all repeating it to one another, lol.
