So I am interesting in getting the Discover It card do they ever run special signup offers? Is there any reason for me to pull the trigger on it now vs later on in the year or next year? I have the freedom and it seems the categories overlap, in which case the spend would go to the freedom due to the way I value URs and it seems like I would want to wait until I can put all my cat spend on the discover to get the double points at the end of the year. The only reason I would be in favor of picking it up sooner than later is because later this year I anticipate closing some credit lines which will lower my available credit somewhat significantly. I'm also toying with the idea of going into the garden for a prolonged period of time after my summer apps, so it would be nice to have another non-AF card that I can grow the credit line on as I garden.
I haven't seen Discover run any sign up bonuses since I started my credit journey. I can say I prefer using Discover over chase for 2 reasons. Discover will double the total cash back rewards you accumulated for the first year. If your total cash back was $500, they will double it and pay you another $500 for a total of $1000 rewards. Discover is very generous with credit limit increase via a sp only. Chase is stingy with increases unless you are willing to take a hp. Where chase is better for me is the interest rate. I had 0 apr for the first year but after that it is 12.99%
If you prefer chase, look for a different card than Discover. Do you have Citi double cash? You can use the Chase bonus 5% and Citi 2% for everything else. I am considering doing this. I am trying to stay in the garden a few more months then apply.
I have both of these cards and here is my take:
The categories do overlap quite a bit and I am not a fan of the rotating categories at all. I never use either of these cards.
Chase will not budge on my 23% apr while Discover has lowered it many times down to the current rate of 12.49%.
Chase has only given me two auto CLI, once from $2000 to $4600, once from $4600 to $7600, no customer initiated CLI.
Discover has grown steadily from $3500 to the current line of $14500 with very little use. SP CLI and they will tell you if they need a HP.
Discover has no foreign transaction fee.
Frontline CSRs at Discover are top of the line, Chase has been hit or miss.
Bottome line is that I love everthing about Discover, I just can't find any good reason to use their card. Maybe $1500 spent in 5 years. My advice is wait until you can put the 0% apr promo period or bonus cash to good use.

Could you make use of the double cash back offer? We have no idea when it ends but it might be gone next year. It's up to you to determine if the quarterly categories are reason enough you to go ahead and app.

They overlap this quarter. They do not overlap for Q2 & Q3. Difficult to tell with Q4 as the Freedom calendar just says "Holiday Shopping" while Discover says "Amazon.com & More.
OP it seems a lot of your posts involve trying to justify apps/timing/etc. I think you need to stop waiting for people to talk you into things, and just do them if it feels right to you. You know what Discover IT offers. The double promo is unlikely to last forever, but no one on here knows when it will be pulled. You have the information; it doesn't really matter if us forum-goers tell you you should app or not. You also don't need to app just to app. If you have to talk yourself into a card, it's probably not going to be super beneficial for you.
You need to have confidence in your decisions and do what's best for your credit, not always looking for someone to talk you into or out of something. App timing, "should I app?" "will the bonus be pulled before x date?" are individual choices, not something you can run a poll about. Not trying to be rude. I just think you need to try to have confidence in your decisions.

I thought the restaurant quarters overlapped. Sadly the last two quarters doesn't see that great given where I spend.

I like to have information before making a decision and don't think that is inappropriate to ask for opinions from the community because people may have looked at something in a different way I do and it might raise an angle I haven't thought of. I have complete confidence in all my decisions and don't need to be talked into getting a credit card. I don't app just to app, nor have I ever done that. Asking how long a bonus is going to last for is a highly relevant question. I didn't know the double cash in the first year could go away. That was new information to me since this card was never high on my list in the past due to other priorities.
If it's possible to have a friend refer you under the 2x promo, that'd be the best route. The $50 referral bonus would be doubled to $100 each assuming you both get the promo. I would even negotiate the bonus with your friend, i.e. he pays you $25 cash so your gain is essentially $125 and his/hers is $75... Both parties would still benefit!
I know I certainly would be 100% on board if my friend asked, since it's an easy bonus for just sending a referral email.
