I ordered using the app about 3 days ago and used the 4 on the front.
Another possibility: Your Pizza Hut branch does NOT accept AMEX.
When you order from Pizza Hut online, it determines which branch would deliver your pizza. It is quite possible that your particular branch was set up not to accept AMEX. It is not unheard of that a particular franchise does not accept AMEX.
The reason I am saying this is because I've had this happen to me a couple of times, but mostly from outside the US, and mostly with booking. Happened with Hilton.com booking, using the Hilton AMEX card (the particular hotel does not accept AMEX). The other time, it was with Google Bookings, using Google Pay, and it just plainly stated "invalid card number".
I would try it with a different Pizza Hut branch.

I'm starving and I love Pizza Hut.
Me too and I wanted to order pizza New Year's Eve and I discovered the Pizza Hut about a half mile from my house permanently closed this week..... I was stuck with Papa Johns.

I use the 4 digits on the front of my NFCU Amex... Not sure that's an entirely accurate statement.
