I'm considering Altitude Connect and Altitude Reserve. Connect would be mainly for the SUB and Reserve would be a possible keeper card.
1. I have no history with US Bank. Am I right in thinking I can apply for Connect now? But I cannot apply for Reserve until I have at least a nominal amount of history with Connect?
2. Can Connect points be transferred to Reserve for 1.5 cpp travel or RTR redemptions? I'm guessing not, as no one has mentioned it as a 6% travel/gas card.
3. Any weird restrictions on Connect that would prevent me from just taking a simple statement credit?
4. Any rules to keep in mind about closing accounts and clawbacks?
5. Do they provide eBills to external (namely Schwab) checking accounts?
6. Any 5/24-type rules? Other things to know?
3/24 as primary with one reporting AU. ~800 FICOs per Citi/Amex websites. Few inquiries.

1. I don't have Connect but Cash+. That was my 'entry fee' to USB, but I got in about 4 yrs ago. At the time, I got AR about 3 weeks after getting Cash+, but I had to recon a couple of times. More recent DPs suggest that USB may not grant approvals like that anymore. Others have been able to apply for AR a few days after opening a checking account.
2. No
3. Can't help. Don't have Connect, but I suppose it's the same as AR. Statement credit, RTR or deposit into a USB checking/savings account.
4. Not that I'm aware of. The only time they were closing AR accounts left and right was when people were using it to buy gift cards -- particularly with mobile pay to get 3x --> 4.5x travel.
5. I actually pull from USB and have Schwab listed as a pay-from account.
6. This is really YMMV. Many people say your best bet is 2/12 max, but I don't know if there's hard rule.
If you can use mobile wallet, AR is a definite keeper.
There are always exceptions, but I think US Bank is still working on a 1/12 "rule" for AR. Definitely opening a checking account with them would probably be the easiest entry and you should be a "US Bank customer" in their system shortly after (it should still be on the application page for AR, but I think it states a minimum of 5 days or somewhere around there). Opening a non-AR card qualifies you as well (the Cash+ card I opened about a year or so prior is my only other relationship with them), however doing so may lessen your chances of being approved for the AR in the short term.
I opened mine before they started changing up the underwriting so my personal experience with that will not be relevant. I had a ton of new accounts at the time, and I think even just 6 months later I would have been declined.
As @imaximous mentioned already, there was a big batch of account closures for cash equivalents and GCs, and even some reports of some potential collateral damage from innocent purchases of gift cards. (I take the latter with a grain of salt given the sources on the Internet ("I only made one gift card purchase" could mean you added a $25 Amazon gift card to your $400 grocery trip, or it could be that you bought $10,000 in Visa cards at Simon Mall.)
If you have a lot of mobile wallet purchases, will redeem for travel, and are okay dealing with some of US Bank's quirks (like everything related to the card being a new window), AR is a fantastic card.
Edit: the only other thing I can think of to note is that they do use FICO 9 scores for underwriting. While that can be a plus for many people, especially those with some minor blemishes, for me they are about 50-60 points lower than my FICO 8 scores.
Does 1/12 include accounts on which I'm an AU?
If AU is a problem, I can go the checking account route for AR.
If not, I can maybe go the Connect route.
My recent accounts are:

To answer an earlier question real quick you can apply for the Connect without any prior membership. My mom did this last month since the spending requirement for the SUB was so low. For the AU question I am presuming just like Chase if it shows on your report then it counts whether it's an AU or not. Considering it's just the one (CFU AU) you have to worry about if denied for that reason I would like to think it would be easy to explain that to the recon department to push the approval through. Also, a reminder that if you go the checking account route make sure you have US Bank branches in your state or you won't be approved for a checking account

California, so lots of branches.

Well, even counting that AU card, you're only at 1/12 at this point. I thought your other accounts were also under 12 months old.
If you have the chance to go the checking account route, I'd personally do it that way. Avoid a HP and a new CC account to qualify. Plus, you'll be able to cash out your points. USB will only let you cash out if you use their own banking products. You can get statement credits, but I prefer not to for my own reasons.

Then I'd go that route. It saves a card slot if you don't really want the Connect and keeps your 1/12 status so you can be as clean as you can for an AR app. Believe it's somewhere in the range of waiting 5-10 business days after checking account approval before you can jump on the AR
Edit for correction, I need moar sleep

The official wait period is somewhere in the fine print of the app, but I remember seeing some posts from people who went the banking route and applied the same day in the branch and got approved. I'm terrible at searching, but there are posts about that.
