To be honest, if you are eligible for USAA membership, You might already be qualified for NFCU membership, which has much better rates on credit cards, banking, and loans than USAA.

The eligibility requirements for Navy are far more difficult than USAA. With USAA I'm eligible because of my military service, but I am not eligible for NFCU because I didn't make a career of it.

Absolutely correct. USAA requires only veteran status, while NFCU requires either active duty, retired, or active reserve status. The OP didnt say how the significant other was qualified for USAA, so I threw NFCU out there just in case.

This thread is about credit cards, and I don't want to stray too far from the original topic.

This being said, NFCU might be able to beat USAA on credit cards and loans for some people, but I've never seen them "beat" USAA on banking... it's really hard to beat free!  Smiley Wink

By "beating" USAA I was referring to having higher interest rates on checking and savings accounts.

I guess I just got lucky then.  I'm a vet, now contractor, and I have an NFCU account.  I just use to to transfer my monthly rent money from USAA so that I can take it out in one go.  I had whatever CU was on base before, NFCU bought them out so all accounts moved over.

Agreed... 1% cash back is sorta 'meh', but when I got the card nobody else (but Capital One) would touch me.

They gave me a $7k credit line right out of the gate (I had more baddies then, and my only other major card was QS1 with a limit of $1720... and on the app I self-reported a very modest income).

I've got much better now, but I wouldn't dream of closing it.

I'd agree that their rewards are meh but I was in a similar situation when I first got mine and USAA granted me higher limits and lower APR's than anyone else at the time and didn't CLD back in 2008.  That said, I'm probably closing them as they are now of no use to me.

I don't know how it happened, but I was approved for a credit card not too long ago, and I know that I'm not a full member because they won't give me insurance.

I'm in the same boat; I have checking and a Visa with them, but can't get the insurance, either... at least until I talk my father into buying a policy.  Smiley Frustrated

You're probably like me and got "in" with them before they changed the rules back in late 2013.  Up until then, anybody could get a bank account or credit card.  Oddly, I never got anything under my 'offers' tab until after they changed the rules for membership - even though I'm still not insurance eligible myself.  Actually, they wouldn't even let me use the 'mobile deposit' feature until just a few months before they made the change.  It was originally for folks who had a credit product and were insurance eligible - I was neither - but I got an email one day that it had become available to me.  I thought it was a mistake, but I did a 'test' deposit, and it worked.  No complaints here, but my sudden eligibility seemed a bit 'random'.

I will say one thing, though, if you ever have anything under your 'offers' tab, it seems to be solid.  It even gave me the exact APR I ended up with.  A couple of months after I got my Visa, it showed me 'pre-approved' for a car loan and a Mastercard (with the same APR as my Visa) but I didn't go for either.  I figured I would be pressing my luck if I tried for another card with them right after being approved for one (and a generous one at that... at least for my profile at the time).  While my credit is quite a bit better now, I haven't been "offered" anything since, so either that was a one-off or they preferred my file when it was a bit thinner.

I've never gotten any offers at all from them. Definitely got "in" with USAA before 2013 when membership was kinda open all you had to do was be a member of something, I think. Got the Visa about 2-4 months ago. My approval I think was 7.5k but did a CLI the other day to 14 all with no dollar usage, which is weird -- lol Don't even know why I asked for the CLI. (That's another story for another day, I guess.) I can definitely understand the no offers thing as they just don't love me, but I also don't have them as my primary checking, so there's also that.. And with limited credit card usage, what's the reason to offer me more? I wouldn't. Smiley Very Happy

Re: USAA Credit Cards

I'm on my second card offer right now. First one expired on 7.31, and 8 days later another one popped up.

I've been tempted to ask for a CLI with them as well, but then I think about it and I really would never come close to using the $7k they started me with (I got it last October), and I don't want to take a HP unless there's something I'm really, really wanting.  I have other cards providing 'cushion' for the time being, but I've always made large payments, and I feel USAA would likely be willing to give me a little more if I were to ask.

If it weren't for that darn HP.... LOL  Smiley Very Happy
