Has anyone applied for both usaa credit cards. The master card and the american express. My husband got approve for the master card but not the american express but they pulled equifax for both. I wonder if they have different standards for each card. Has anyone have this happen to them.
Is your husband a full member?
We just opened up a savings account and switch our home insurance to them about two weeks ago. I would think we were full members. What considers you a full member.
To be a full member you or your husband need to be military, honorably discharged or retired military, or a relative of a full member.
Banking services don't require full membership but I believe insurance products do - at least auto insurance does. They started as an imsurance company writing auto insurance for commissioned officers.
I guess we are full members. My dad was in the military and he's a full member and we have our home insurance with usaa. And we are decidiing on our car insurance.
That's how I joined - my dad is retired Navy and has insured his cars with USAA forever. They're pretty agressive inviting members to name all their family members for eligibility - my ex-wife and stepchildren remain eligible for example, through me to my dad.

I thought I've read this same question on several different threads, too?
Are you saying he applied for the AmEx and got declined and then turned around and got approved for the MasterCard? If so, then maybe there are different standards.
I don't think there are different standards for each card. I do know that they have a limit on the total amount of credit they can extend across all product options that will depend in part on one's credit, income and USAA history. If approved for a MasterCard and declined for the AmEx then chances are they just don't feel comfortable extending more credit.
He applied for mastercard first and got approve for 4,000 and then 3 days later applied for Amex. It probably because we are new members and they probably dont want to extend too much credit at one time. You are probably right, its not different standards, its probably amount of credit extended.

That's what I think.
Hold on about 6 months from date MasterCard was approved and ask them for a CLI or an AmEx. You can get a CLI without a hard pull.
Once you get what you feel is a good limit on the MasterCard, apply for their AmEx. If they decline, they have been known to reconsider if you ask them to just transfer a part of your MasterCard limit to the new AmEx.
Both DW and myself have the USAA World MC and Rewards AMEX.
We applied for both cards on same day back to back, all instant approvals.
But we have both been members for years and have 2 good incomes and they approved relatively high CL's.
So, yes, you can get both, but if they only approved $4k on the initial MC, chances are you need to age the account and membership for a while and then look at more in a year or so.
