Re: Uber Visa vs WF Propel vs AMEX Gold?

I think the Premier is just not that useful of a card with a $95 AF. I got the first year AF waived, so I'm still using it and I like it for 3x on gas, but there isn't much else to it that makes it worth keeping. Actually, I'd consider the HH Ascend as a better card than the Premier. $95 AF, but 10 PP uses, Hilton Gold (free breakfast), and solid earning rates.

I use wells propel+visa sig, no AF, 4.5% on travel. It has no transfer partner, and it is an Amex network card.

Yes I believe it is. Yes it does have trip cancellation/interruption protection.

Im unable to find a information page for this cancellation insurance, can you provide a link?

Re: Uber Visa vs WF Propel vs AMEX Gold?

I had the Uber visa for over a year and just got the Amex rose gold card.

I really love the Uber card and have had zero issues earning bonus spend and redeeming for cashback. The online shopping 2% is awesome when paired with ebates too. Only thing to note is Uber and Lyft are in the 2% category, which in my opinion is weird since both could fallen under the 3% travel category even if they didn’t want to give Uber 4%. I got the $50 credit on $5k spend without even trying. I don’t know why others have commented about Barclays being a “con” for the Uber card. I have no issues and had ZERO need to contact customer service at Barclays for the Uber card. Only real negative which may not be a big deal to you is that Uber doesn’t have travel and purchase protections, part of the reason why I decided to get the Amex gold to complement my Uber card. Although I never really expect to use these benefits.

In comparison, I’ve had to call Amex multiple times for my Rose Gold card and it took almost three times as long to receive my card from Amex. So much for Barclays being a con on Uber. One more reason I did get the Amex is because I had a referral for 50k bonus instead of the 25k, and it made sense to have a personal Amex card to better utilize the MR points I earn with my corporate Amex too. I like the 4x points at supermarkets for groceries too - Uber doesn’t cover eating in and does incentivize only dining out. Also heard that if you already have an Amex, new card apps don’t result in a hard inquiry if you have a good record with the company. Just want to highlight that on the Amex it’s 4x on “US restaurants”, while compared to Uber, it’s 4% on essentially all dining out. I have heard that this means that dining places that use Square readers or that code as cafes/bars may not get the bonus points and that overall Amex is not as broad with how they code dining transactions. I have not used my Amex gold enough to know how much of a hassle this is in reality though, but my Uber card has gotten me 4% on all dining purchases even overseas.

Cannot speak for the Propel but I don’t believe it was around when I applied for Uber visa or it would be a strong contender. Just because of this thread I read up on the Propel. Solid option to me because travel also includes gas. But my concern is how you use points through WF.

On all three hitting Uber’s $500 spend for $50 in points is easiest. Next is Amex at $2k and then Wells Fargo at $3k. Might be something you would want to consider too.

I have to slighltly disagree. The Premier doesnt get much love in general due to the lackluster transfer partners. If you prefer the simplier route, one can also redeem at 1.25c a point through the portal. Other than that, the card itself actually does has great earning potential. The card pretty much covers all of the major spending categories (Gas, Travel, Dining, Entertainment).

With that being said, unless you spend alot on gas and travel it's probably not worth keeping beyond the 1st year. Its also worth considering that if you do plan to get the SUB in the future, your timeclock will likely reset to 24 months if you close it after the 1st year. This is one of the reasons I may keep it at least for the second year.

Maybe you want Citi Premier for other reasons, but your CSP has roughly the same travel protections.

Personal spend: Amex Gold, Amex Schwab Plat., BofA PR+CCR(x2), Costco
Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE
SUB chasing: AA Platinum Select

The main issue is that it's $95 for a card that simply doesn't provide any real benefits outside of the transfer partners. Honestly, the Citi Thankyou Prestige, though it costs far more per year, provides much easier pathways to recoup the AF. OTOH, there's simply no getting the $95 AF back in any way. There's really no real value to using this card over other $95 AF cards that do provide real benefits. The earning potential is solid, but is not much better than many other no AF cards.

Trip cancellation is a pretty big deal if you ask me. Also, TPG seems to say trip delay protection kicking in earlier than 12 hrs, that would be big deal too.

Now pure dollar value wise, I don't think either CSP or Premier match prople+visa sig ( I am not even sure CSR matchs the wells combo right now). But benefit wise, premier and CSP each has its own advantages.

I don’t really think propel is comparable to CSP/Premeir due to it not being able to transfer to travel partners, thats where you are going to get the best value out of premier and CSP. To me its more comparable to maybe Barclays arrival + card where you are just redeeming travel credits ? Unless i am misunderstanding how propel works they aren’t really comparable.

Re: Uber Visa vs WF Propel vs AMEX Gold?

Not sure why this thread moved towards travel cards like CSR/CSP? Op is a medical student with what sounds like millennial type spending that sound best covered for Uber or Propel. Highly doubt there is frequent travel in Op’s future where travel cards might be more beneficial at the moment. Would also go for no AF card considering student status.
