Maybe you want Citi Premier for other reasons, but your CSP has roughly the same travel protections.

Trip cancellation is a pretty big deal if you ask me. Also, TPG seems to say trip delay protection kicking in earlier than 12 hrs, that would be big deal too.

Now pure dollar value wise, I don't think either CSP or Premier match prople+visa sig ( I am not even sure CSR matchs the wells combo right now). But benefit wise, premier and CSP each has its own advantages.

I don’t really think propel is comparable to CSP/Premeir due to it not being able to transfer to travel partners, thats where you are going to get the best value out of premier and CSP. To me its more comparable to maybe Barclays arrival + card where you are just redeeming travel credits ? Unless i am misunderstanding how propel works they aren’t really comparable.

If you are into flexible travel vacation date/destination, sure transfering points to a partner could yield high return for sure, all you need is to wait for right time and right sale.

If you are like me, who just need the reward point to cover necessary work or other family duty related travels with little flexibility on where and when the travel has to happen, CSP/premier is just another 2.5cpd value cards, which pales in comparison to the 4.5cpd from propel+visa sig.

then again, propel has next to nothing in the benefit department, lol

chriswmfeng,

I think you may be misreading the benefit terms if you think delay protection takes less than 12 hours on Premier.

I've actually examined the travel insurance terms of Chase and Citi quite closely. If you want to start a fresh thread so we don't derail this one further, I could walk you through some of them.

Personal spend: Amex Gold, Amex Schwab Plat., BofA PR+CCR(x2), Costco
Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE
SUB chasing: AA Platinum Select

Not sure why this thread moved towards travel cards like CSR/CSP? Op is a medical student with what sounds like millennial type spending that sound best covered for Uber or Propel. Highly doubt there is frequent travel in Op’s future where travel cards might be more beneficial at the moment. Would also go for no AF card considering student status.

Thank you. So you don't think the Amex Gold will be worth it, over a straight cashback card like the propel, even if I use all the credits? With credits used it's only a $30 AF, which I feel I would easily pass with the 4x dining and groceries, and the occasional flight. It's just maybe MR points aren't as valuable to me now as cash? I think if that's the case then I'll probably go with the propel over the uber.

If you aren't using MR the way they are supposed to be used then cashback card is better almost 100% of the time.

While this is true, MR can be saved and used in the future. If you feel like travel is something you'll be doing in the future, it wouldn't be too hard to get value out of MR when the time comes. Honestly, given that OP travels a couple times a year, MR could still come in quite handy.

Re: Uber Visa vs WF Propel vs AMEX Gold?

OP, I have both Uber Visa and Amex Gold. So I cannot say which one you should get over the other because ultimately you have to pick which one would work best for you.

Uber is no hassle straight cashback. $25 redemption threshold. Can also redeem for gift cards and Uber credits if you prefer.

Amex Gold on the other hand if you can use all the credits is a very good deal for a premium card and the MR points, if redeemed properly could get you some nice travel that would be worth more than cashback. The gold metal card is also nice lol!

I don’t have Propel but if you go with no AF, between Uber and Propel, the biggest differences are online shopping on Uber is 2% and on Propel you have gas at 3x points covered under travel. If you online shop more and have no car you might want to pick Uber over Propel. But if you have Wells Fargo as a bank and want to have an Amex Gold down the road, getting the Amex Propel might be better.

Ultimately the decision is yours.

Re: Uber Visa vs WF Propel vs AMEX Gold?

I know generally I shouldn't cancel cards, but if I get the Amex Gold for now due to the 50k SUB and the dining offer they have currently, and later decide the card isn't working out for me, can I open an Amex ED and cancel the Gold, to keep the points? Or will they not transfer over that way.

Re: Uber Visa vs WF Propel vs AMEX Gold?

Yes you can cancel gold after first year and open ed and your points will be intact. I would open ed first then cancel gold to be safe

Just make sure you don't close the account before a year has passed. Doing so could put you on the Amex SUB blacklist. But yes, you can keep the points with an Amex ED. Or, you could also open a BBP and keep the points there. 2x/$ isn't bad up to 50K.

EDIT: Not sure how it double posted. This has happened a couple times to me now, where the page will give me an error and tell me to correct the highlighted errors before posting. Then, I'll look at the original thread and I'll see my post has actually posted...

@jdbkiang, it happens sometimes. Smiley Frustrated

If it happens again, simply use the 'Report Inappropriate Content' option to flag the dup and we'll take care of it.  (Yes, I know it's not 'Inappropriate', but we use that for everything.)
