I was interested in possibly upgrading my PRG card to Platinum since I'm going to be traveling more in the coming year. I read some encouraging feedback on the forums about it being easily done, so I called to inquire. The CSR told me that "Premier Rewards" was a "different family" than the Platinum card, so therefore, my card was not able to be upgraded to a Platinum and if I wanted it I would have to apply for a new card.
Has anyone heard of this before? Not sure if I should try calling and asking another CSR or if this is a fact or new change.

Although I do not have or want an Amex Charge card, since joining this forum I have heard people upgrading from Green ---->Gold-------->Platinum.
And did the CSR really use the phrase " different family"? B/C they are both charge cards!
Now, if they implied that your acct was not "eligible" then that would make a little more sense to me
But, If I were you I would try speaking to another CSR or use Amex "online chat" they tend to be very helpful

She did specifically say "different family" so I thought she was wrongly referring to my BCE card, so I clarified, and she said because I had a "PREMIER REWARDS" Gold card (I guess versus a regular Gold card?) that it was now considered a diff family? I've specifically seen people on the forums upgrading from PRG to Plat in addition to Green straight to Plat so I'm very confused. I tried using the online chat but the window didn't pop up. I guess I'll try that again or try calling again and speaking to a different CSR. Sounds wacky to me. She didn't say I was ineligible at all.
There's no different family, Ive had both the Plat and PRG the only stipulation is you have to have the card for one year before you switch(either way). The Platinum card does have a different(higher) level of customer service,
I spoke to a diff CSR and they said I had to wait until the account was a year old before I would be eligible. Poo, oh well. I saw some people have luck before the 12 months, so I figured I'd try. At least that makes more sense than being some different family.

But then OP would miss out on that 40K MR sign up bonus.
Maybe just appy incognito and close your PRG before AF hits.

I know they'd backdate, but would that affect my AAoA at all if I did it that way? I don't love the idea of the HP but I was hoping they'd offer a bonus if I was eligible to upgrade.
It will only help your AAoA since they backdate. As far as the HP, there's no helping that. AFAIK, you only get a bonus if you're targetted to upgrade - not if you choose to upgrade in which case you could be waiting for a while before you're targetted to upgrade.
If you really can't afford the HP I guess all you can do is be patient.
