i see so many people get upset if they don't get the "upgraded" version or they get crazy excited when they do get one but i don't understand why. granted, i know the benefits they have (you get them in your welcome letters and can easily look them up. the benefits can be nice if used) but the people that worry the MOST about it are the ones that'll never use them for what they're for.
what's they hype? if you don't use it (or already have a WEMC or VS) then why worry if you don't have multiple? i am just curious
IMO, I believe it's more of a psychological association given the aesthetics (i.e. marketing) and a validation of progress for some individuals. Plus, more along the lines that they see others in these and other forums and they want to have the same things others have (e.g. jealousy and/or challenge). It's fairly certain that the majority will not use a variety of the extended (or available) benefits from having a WEMC or VS but most individuals want to see the logo aside from say a Flexible Spending feature. The average consumer doesn't give a hoot or likely aren't aware of the difference in tiers, let alone benefits.
Besides, most of these tiers are so vastly saturated and diluted, it doesn't translate to the "exclusivity" that these once offered in the beginning. If the CC provides a great wealth of perks and benefits as a stand-alone product, the VS/WEMC is just icing on the cake IME. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
Why does anybody do the things they do?
Before I started lurking here I wouldnt have known the difference between a Credit 1 card and whatever perceived top line card you could think of. Now I find myself taking second glances at what strangers use to pay with. Doesn't make any sense or have any personal affect on me - just much more aware of credit related stuff.
I am waiting for my new DC to show up. I want it to be a WEMC and would probably utilize a few of the perks. I didnt app for the card because it could be and wont be dissapointed or change the way I use the card if its not though. I seriously doubt many outside this forum or others like it, care or know the difference
I think a big part of it is - we are conditioned to want what we dont have but I imagine there are plenty who will use the benefits.
Everyone wants what they cant have. I am honored to have two Visa Signatures, and two World Mastercards. VS is much harder to attain than WMC IMO, and WEMC seems to be the hardest to attain with upgrades, but is easiest of them all to get just from picking a particular card always issued as that. I guess one could argue the same for VS but I see more low limit WEMCs than VS's
My favorite style of cards were the capital one quick silver WEMCs before they had chips and raised numbers.

+1 Pretty much how I feel. I don't even really know the benefits for my VS Quicksilver or my World Sallie Mae. I don't really care. I could've received Platinum versions of both and it wouldn't have made a difference to me. I don't use/know the benefits anyway. The purpose of the cards for me is the cash back (and building good credit history).

Right, it matters not for me either at the end of the day. Sure, the perks are available but I have yet to be stopped at a restaurant, hotel or grocery store where any of my cards are handed out and a clerk/associate or someone would say "OMG... Shut the front door! Is that a Visa Signature?!?" or, "I absolutely loooooved the silver balls on your Citi MC...wink wink, can I see them again?"
And, yes I have used the WEMC and VS benefits for the cards that provide some of decent ones but I don't necessarily get disappointed if my next card is not VS/WEMC - for instance, NASA has some decent rewards and a $30K CL but it's not VS and works/is just fine by me
