Walmart: Pre-Approved... Should I do it?

Ok so I wanted to buy something on walmart.com and I noticed that I was pre-approved for the walmart card. I am not sure if I should apply though. I just got the cards I wanted (Freedom and Amex Cards).

But here is the kicker. I have Barclay's Rewards card which is supposed to give me the Free FICO TU08 score. But it doesn't update regularly. From what I heard, Walmart does it each and every month - like clockwork.

Is getting another card just for the regular updates on the FICO TU08 worth it? Here is the screenshot.

Thanks for your input.

I wouldn't just for the TU.  Don't get me wrong, I started off with the store, then got the upgrade to Discover but it's a card I have to remember to use.

 Hi Lexie..

I really don't need the card, honestly. I just like the benefit of getting a regular update on my TU08. And for once in say 4 months that I would shop at Walmart, maybe I don't really need it. But then, there is that gas discount too. LOL. WoW.. decisions, decisions.

Totally understand.  I don't have WalMart Gas Stations in my state, only Sams Club.

+1! I just closed mine when I found out the rewards would not be the same as the Sam's Mastercard. That rendered this card practically useless to me, except for the free FICO.

You really should only get it if you have a good use for it.  I do enjoy the monthly FICO and the "cash over" feature.  I haven't used the special financing option yet, but that also makes it a good card to have.  However, if those things don't appeal to you, then save the HP.

Start: 619 (TU08, 9/2013) | Current: 798 (TU08, 3/12/26)
BofA CCR WMC $75000 | AMEX Cash Magnet $64000 | Disney Premier VS $52000 | Discover IT $46000 | NFCU cashRewards Plus WMC $41000 |Venmo VS $30000 | Cash+ VS $30000 | Macy's AMEX $25000 | Ralphs Rewards WEMC $25000 | Citi Custom Cash MC $24600 | Synchrony Premier $24,200 | GS Apple Card WEMC $22000 | WF Attune WEMC $22000 | Freedom Flex WEMC $21500 | Amazon VS $15000 | Target MC $14500 | Sephora VS $14400 | BMO Harris Cash Back MC $14000 | Rakuten AMEX $12500 | T-Mobile VS $12000 | AAA Travel Advantage VS $10000 | JCP MC $5500 | BR MC $9600 | Wayfair MC $9500 | Burlington $1500 ~~

I could always use a card which gives me a free FICO score, plus 15 cents per gallon discount in gas. But honestly, with about 10-12 gallons every two weeks (I would save $1.50-$1.75), really not much of an incentive.

With that said, I was really "itchy". I feel better now. Not doing it, at least not for a while.

I'm disappointed with the rewards on the card, but the FICO score does appear like clockwork. The cash-over feature with the purchase is neat.

There's no annual fee, so while I have to remember to use it periodically, I doesn't really "hurt" to have it in my wallet. The gas discount isn't as good as the rebates I earn on other cards, so for me the real reasons are that there is the promotional financing of the larger purposes, and it demonstrates to other lenders that having a $10k credit line isn't going to burn a hole in my pocket.

I was going to garden... Honest!

Re: Walmart: Pre-Approved... Should I do it?

The Mastercard will be 1% from dollar one unlike the Discover. My philosophy is only apply for cards I need for rewards etc not because I want them. You get to many cards you want may hurt the chances for the cards you need.

Discover IT $17k / US Bank Ace (VSig) $13.5K / US Bank Cash+ (VSig) $13.5k
Sam's Mastercard $15k / Walmart Mastercard $10k / Blispay $7.5k PayPal Ex MC $10.8k
CareCredit 5k / Husq $5k / Cap1 QS $4.5k / Barclay Ring $5.35k / Citi DC (WMC) $12k
Gardening Date 7/01/16 / MyFico 08: EQ 801 / TU 777 / EX 771 / 06/08/17
