That's scary. When a CCC calls to ask you if you made the purchase. Yikes!

I'd honestly have all my banks err on the side of caution. They want to freeze my card until I can go through some verification process, I have zero problem with that. I have a few debit cards which just sit in a safe place and don't get used for literally anything if I get stuck, or I can just wander down to my bank (one of the few advantages to having a local bank) and withdraw enough yuppie foodstamps to get me through getting replacement cards.
Only nit I have is I had to go through verification 4 times through 3 different methods before I finally got a BOFA hold lifted from acknowledging some transactions that were mine ($0 charge to confirm a credit card for a subscrption product before the actual subscription service... blah).
It is scary that they called me. At first I thought it was neat and they must randomly do that for security and then when I read what had been happening I freaked out alittle. Especially since just yesterday I linked all my accounts to my checking account! All my accounts seen fine and I get emails sent to my phone anytime something changes with my account or an order is placed. I just wanted to make everyone aware that it was going on because I bet it would be a pain to undo damage a hacker causes and we are all working really hard on getting our credit in good standing.
This kind of stuff shows how important it is to use credit cards online instead of debit cards. With credit cards, you have much more protection from fraud cases like these. With debit cards, it becomes a living nightmare to recover your stolen funds.
I do not use my debit card for anything but ATM withdrawals. Why not get some perk or points or cash back instead?

Totally agree, haven't used my debit card since my rebuild last year.

I've used it once so far, to purchase a money order for rent because I couldn't find my checkbook. But I've recently found out that there is a flat 10$ CC fee to pay rent (no matter how many months you pay at once) so as long as I pay a few months rent at a time, I'll actually make a profit thanks to my cash rewards

I tend to agree, except this system left me in a very bad spot once. I was driving across the desert through california to arizona and they assumed because it was being used at gas stations that someone stole it. So they put a hold on my card and tried to call my cell phone. Well where I was at, I got no cellphone coverage, and I couldn't put gas in my tank when I stopped at the next gas station. This is before I had credit cards and only one bank account. Luckily I just happened to park in an area that had enough signal for me to get the call and tell them I made the purchases and was able to continue on with my trip. I was fuming when I called them to complain the next day....
