Went over limit - how long should I wait to ask for CLI

A few months ago I accidentally went over my limit (by $1.22) on my cap1 card!!  AARRGG!!!  Now this shows on my credit report that my highest credit exceeds my credit limit.  I'm not sure but assume that this hurts my score.  I only have a $500 credit limit by the way.  My question is how long is long enough to wait to ask for a CLI so that this doesn't show negatively on my credit report.  I wouldn't even care if they raised my CL by $50.  Also - no lates or recent baddies on anything.  Middle score is 655.

I would call 800-889-9939 and ask for a CLI now.

It shouldn't hurt your score, since it didn't involve a late or anything. These aren't factored in FICO scoring. I will hurt you with CapOne, and it might catch the attention of future lenders doing a manual review. ("OMG, look at that, ficowarrior once had a balance of $501 on a $500 account!!!")

If you can get CapOne to give you an increase, it would be worth the call. I'm guessing that they'll make you do hard time for a while. FWIW, I have had several over-limits showing on my cards over the years, and it's never been mentioned with subsequent apps. Maybe it has resulted in a lower CL or something, but I haven't been denied for them, and it has not been commented on.

Buying a house? Let it ride. Stay away from the inquiries.

I don't think they will inqire at all at that Capital One number.  They never pulled one on me.  If there is a CLI in the system for that card they will hook you up. The only way they do a hard inq. is, if you ask for a manual review after being told there was no CLI available.

I called and received a CLI a couple of months ago with no hard pull.  Call the back door number and see what happens.
