What am I doing wrong?

Hi everyone,  I'm new here but have been working on my credit for a year now.  I'm hoping to get some insight on how to increase my scores.  I use Scorewatch & Privacy Matters to monitor my progress.

I work in healthcare and have a decent (not exceptional) salary with 18 years in my field.
I had to file a Chapter 7 in 2002 and mostly lived cash only until I began credit repair.

I have cleaned up my reports as much as I can.  All my pre bk accts are now noted as IIB.
I had a cell phone chargeoff that has been reporting every month as a CO. I had thought it was a Chapter 7 debt and have been trying to contact the OC directly about it and finally got a callback yesterday.  I found out it was a postbk debt after all so it is now paid off & they will mark it on my reports as paid in full.

On TU & Equifax I have no other post bk debts.  Exp still has two other incorrect ones that I am still disputing.

I really want to get a cash reward CC to use for routine things and pay it in full every month.  There are 2 that I am really interested in (Penfed & NASA) and they both pull Equifax.  I have applied for one and got denied. However the cell phone CO was still there at the time I applied.  I haven't applied for the other yet.

I have gotton some credit since I started repair:
Previously a Mervyn's acct 200 CL since 2000.
02/07 Target 200, Orchard 300
05/07 Mortgage (yay!) Carecredit 5000
7/07 Walmart 800, Old Navy 450, HSBC Visa 700
9/07 Futuretrust MC 1500,  Valero 400
10/07 Sam's credit 1200

All are paid in full every month except the Carecredit which has a 3K balance from kiddo's dental work.  Of course the mortgage is ongoing.

Unfortunatly for every approval there were 3 denials.  I tried Penfed, and a couple of other cash reward cards like Sam's Discover and was shot down on them all. I don't plan to apply for anything for 6 monthes and then it will only be the two cards I listed.

So where am I going wrong?  Seems noone likes me much.  How can I improve?
Let the current accounts and inquiries age?
Will the paid cell phone CO make any difference?
I know BK hurts but mine is over 5 years old.  I have seen peeps get these cards with newer bk's than mine.

Scorewatch says my Equifax FICO is 668

Any advice? I apologize for the length.
Thank you very much,

Eventually

Re: What am I doing wrong?

Hi eventually, and welcome to the forum. You will find tons of invaluable info here as you continue your credit repair. Most of us came here for the exact same reasons as you.

You are taking positive steps to improve your situation, and that is good. You are not doing anything wrong, that I can see.

I do notice that all of your cc's except Mervyn's, are all 2007 issue. Because of the newness, they have not begun to help you. But they will as they age, and get older. Try to refrain from applying for cc's because each inquiry detracts from your FICO scores. Be very prudent in applying. Like 2 or 3 per year.

Also, instead of paying them off in full every month, try paying 90% of your statement amount. The CRA's(credit reporting agencies) love to see cc's used, but like to see low utilization rates. This shows them that you use your cc's responsibly. That will help your scores. Pay on time, every time.

Your chapter 7 should have already fallen off your CR, or will by the end of the year. If it's still on your CR, THAT is a major issue that's effecting your score.

Have you pulled all 3 credit reports? If not, imo, you should. And review them carefully, for any errors(yes they may contain errors).

Good luck to you! Smiley Happy

Re: What am I doing wrong?

I respectfully disagree with the 2-3 cards per year.
Don't apply for credit that will reduce the AVG age.

Don't apply for credit you don't need or don't have a reason for.

Be picky-

Allow me to quote Brammy "Ask not what you can do for your cards, but what your cards can do for you."

Re: What am I doing wrong?

Time is now your best friend. It is mine also.

Your cards need to age some (mine do also) so no apping for at least a year.  Now if you get a 'pre-selected' offer that has good terms/rates - then perhaps go for - otherwise, you will get much better offers after the year passes (and you haven't accumulated any baddies).  Through the year keep util low (they will probably raise your limits w/o a request by doing this).  That target card you can turn into a target visa by following the advice here (use sparingly and PIF).

One thing I will suggest is a gas card - Exxon or Citgo if in your area - these are managed by CitiBank and Citi just gave me a $2500 MC on a 'pre-selected' offer.  I also have Home Depot (again managed by them).  The thing is you can't mess up any card managed by them - or they ratejack all of them.

Research what company manages your store cards - and expect some offers from them in about 6-9 months from the time you opened the first account handled by them.

Re: What am I doing wrong?

Thank you all for the replies.  I appreciate it.

I figured that the age of my accounts and the Carecredit balance were my main issues.

I don't plan to apply for anything for 6 monthes and then it will be a CU only, prob Nasa since I will have a IRA set up there by then, nothing else. I haven't applied to Nasa before. If Nasa denies me then I will wait an additional 6 months.

I tried a Citi backed gas card & was denied.  I will research my other cards although it mostly looks to be GEMB, Barclay's, HSBC & I'm not sure who handles Valero.

I figure that in 6-12 monthes my accts will be aged & the Carecredit balance will be significantly less. The Carecredit is under a interest free promotion for 12 monthes in which I plan to get near all of it paid off before that expires.  If there is a balance I will prob apply for a LOC with my bank or CU to pay the rest off without losing my nose in interest.  The balance was unavoidable as kiddo needed emergent  dental care & insurance doesn't cover alot.

I received a letter from the cell phone chargeoff that the acct is now paid in full and has been reported to the CRA's.

I don't know that that makes much difference in the scheme of things but it's done.

A cash reward card is my only goal as I plan to use it with my Futuretrust card and PIF the both of them every month.   I wanted my money to work for me a little.

After that is acheived I will app for nothing till I can qualify for Amex or Discover, which may be never lol.

BTW, I opted out when I started credit repair.  Now there is nothing that should come back to haunt me.  Should I opt back in?

Thanks again

Re: What am I doing wrong?

IMHO -  yes, I would opt-in --- that way you will know who might consider giving you credit.  Just no apping!

What I find funny is that I keep getting offers from the same people I already have cards with -  but the offers are better so in the fututre I can use it to negotiate rates or AF.

I have a 3" notebook that I file everything in.. all offers, all the paperwork when I receive a card, my credit reports, the disputes, etc.

Re: What am I doing wrong?

Thank you!  Does anyone know how to opt back in? It's been so long ago I can't remember how.

Sorry to be so dumb,

I know this is an old post but I was wondering why you said their Bankruptcy should have fallen off just in 5 years? They said they filed in 2002 and this was posted in 2007. Am I missing something? I'm wondering because my DW filed in 2003 and she said it would drop off in 2010. Is that wrong?

Thanks.

Re: What am I doing wrong?

Chapter 7 BKs stay reporting for 10 years as a public record on your credit report.  If filed in 2002, will remove in 2012.  If your wife filed in 2003, then it will fall off her report in 2013.

I filed in Nov. 1999 and the CRAs all tell me it will fall off in Nov 2009.
