What can balance transfer checks be used for?

DW and I received balance transfer checks in the mail associated with our SM cards, encouraging us to take advantage of the 0% APR through May 2016. Can I use these for anything? If I purchase a car with them, does that count as a cash advance? Would the normal credit card rules apply? I.E., if a place takes checks but not MasterCard, would these be useable?

In my experience, you can use them for anything.

Also in my experience, they're accepted like bank checks rather than like  credit cards, so you can use them even at a place that doesn't take any type of credit cards. You can also write them to yourself or to cash and deposit them in a bank account.

I've only used my SM BT checks four or five times, though, so I may not know the whole picture.
