What..is a "thin profile " ? Discover

Seems as though lots of folks, here, talk about how Discover "likes thin profiles" !

As an uninformed person to this language ,  what is a "thin profile " in Discover 's "eyes" ?

a thin profile is someone who has only one or only a few cards, with not a lot of available credit, and AHOA is only a few years or less. Your profile would be considered thin, by looking at your Sig.

 +1 for what pizza wrote.

I would add that your "thin" appearance looks ripe for a Disco-it card.

While I agree with the first reply for the most part, it's important to recognize that it's not just credit cards that make up ones file.  "Thin" generally speaking refers to a limited number of total accounts, usually about 5 +/- 1 or 2 depending on who you talk to.  It's possible that someone could have a couple of student loans, a couple of auto loans but only 1 credit card and be say 25 years old with a AAoA of 5 years and have a file that wouldn't necessarily be considered "thin" - I for example only had 1 credit card for 15 years, but at the age of 35 had over 15 accounts on my credit report (only one of which was a CC) with my oldest account being 15 years, AAoA being 8 years.  My file wouldn't have been considered thin, even though it only contained one revolver.

When I got my discover back in 2014, I was the ultimate thin file, my CR's were just blank with just my name, addresses. No accounts whatsoever and they started me with a $500 line.

Just because they like thin files doesn't mean that you can't get approved with a thick file.. if you qualify then you qualify.

I think that more or less goes without saying.  The point isn't that Discover prefers thin files over thick files, it's that Discover prefers thin files relative to competitors that may shy away from thin files.

I also got my Discover back in 2014. Got it in March, my file only showed a HP from Cap1 in February.

Re: What..is a "thin profile " ? Discover

I've certainly have very few cards ( 2 CC and Care Credit ) but my AAOA is 6.5 - 8.2 yrs.

The new cards brought down my old history ( 28 yrs w/EX) , so, is this still young enough?

Re: What..is a "thin profile " ? Discover

Im guessing your thin in open TL, but not in AAoA.. Still in Discovers "ideal"...... (You don't have a lot of cards/revolving accounts) Discover wants to be your daily driver.. and partly why i think they like folks with not a lot of TLs and stuff.. is its very likely they will be used.. From what iv seen.. they want to be front and center......Someone with multiple cards may not use them as much as someone who only has a few...

Did i forget to mention if you haven't been app crazy/app spree... Your scores look good and id go for it?
