Car tags.  You can go to any HEB and renew your car tags just by showing proof of insurance and the renewal notice .Faster then the DMV and mail.

if you have ovrerdraft protection on the account, you can over draft,
Holds for motels and car rentals, could freeze money for needed for checks, auto drafts, more like to cause a problem rather than you not having the avaiable credit on the credit card
You only get a few days float vs 6- 7 weeks you get with a standred credit cards
statistics show that more consumers have problems disputing debit card purchases than those made on credit cards
debit card rewards suck alot are .5% cash eqv , new paypal cards get 1% instant cash as soon as it posts, but remember if you do the paypal money market it's NOT FDIC insured

Underline, bold, and italicize every word of this post! I couldn't agree more!
Debit cards are dangerous, and should be avoided at all costs!

Just to illustrate one of the potential dangers: your card is stolen and before you have a chance to cancel it someone charges a large amount of money on it. Your checking account is overdrawn, incurring a fee. You report the card stolen and they waive the fee but you're short the cash while they investigate, which can take up to 30, 45, or 60 days (can't recall this one, maybe it depends on the bank). Before you had a chance to deposit or transfer additional funds to the account, someone you wrote a check to attempts to deposit it so the check bounces. You may have incurred another fee from your bank and possibly from whoever it is you wrote the check to. Even if you manage to waive all fees, you're short that money while the bank investigates. You hope that at the conclusion of the investigation they will return all your lost money to you. This can be even worse if your card is not physically stolen and only the number is because all of steps may have already occurred before you even realize anything went wrong.

On the other hand if it's a credit card, none of that money is yours and you're not responsible to pay any of it back while they investigate.

I prefer the second version.

It's not a matter of being responsible or not.  It's about the fact that every time you use a debit card, you are just opening up your bank account and allowing a merchant to withdraw funds.  And you are trusting them to only withdraw the amount that is authorized.

If one day someone takes more than they are allowed to, well, just see the post above by ChaoticKinesis...

With a credit card, on the other hand, if someone tries to overcharge me, it is the credit card issuer's money sitting in limbo while the whole matter is investigated.  Not my own.

The pictures are good but many places have you swipe the card yourself where no one else ever even looks at the card. Then there's the fact that many of the time cashiers just don't care.

Finally, I would love to know what is so irresponsible about being robbed.

Just thought I should add that anyone who carries around a debit card better make sure their savings is not linked as overdraft protection because then a thief could really have some fun and you can be out a lot of money for a while.

Starting next year, I want to start using Debit/Check Card more often and let me credit cards settledown a little bit. Any suggestions as to what is the best Debit/CheckCard you have seen or you would recommend?

I personally like BOFA. I haven't had any problems with them and I've been with them for several years. I also like the idea of my picture on my checkcard. However, there is one thing to point out which could be a nuisance. I only found out about it when it happened to my boyfriend.

They froze his checkcard when they saw some unlikely charges on the card. It alerted the fraud department so they froze the card. Well, my boyfriend had taken a weekend trip with his friend down to Los Angeles (I'm in Northern California) and had used his checkcard a few times to get gas.  I'm assuming BOFA's fraud dept thought this was out of the ordinary and froze it.

It was a nuisance but I think I'd rather have them freeze the card if there were charges that appeared out of the ordinary.

When I went to Hawaii this past summer, I called BOFA to let them know I would be there for a week and that I would be using my checkcard. They notated it and everything was okay since I used the card twice when I was in Hawaii. I'm sure my card would've been frozen had I not called.

But yes, if BOFA sees something strange happening on your checkcard (or any CC you have with them, which I do), they will definitely freeze the card. I know some people won't like that idea though. It can cause a lot of problems if you only have your checkcard on hand. I use my checkcard about twice a week and that's to get groceries and/or gas.

I really wouldn't recommend BOFA's checkcard to people who will find the situation I just described above a nuisance. I don't mind it so much since it's like a safety net. I also always call in to BOFA now if I do travel to let them know I may be using my checkcard. Most of the time, I may use it once while traveling but otherwise, cash becomes my best friend during those times. Smiley Wink

Re: What is the best Debit or Check Card that you have seen?

Thanks every one. I have to agree with every ones input about BOFA and looks like I am doing the right thing. I have BOFA Check Card with my picture on it. Also I got my 15.5 year old Daughter a BOFA check card also.

I'll keep the card and use it more often this year and possibly add the AirLine Rewards option to the card. I never had any problems with using the card or being frozen. Couple of times when I did check by phone bank security called me over the to verify the validity of the check. That is a comfort to know they are out there to help.

Re: What is the best Debit or Check Card that you have seen?

I love my Chase Continental debit card. It is connected to my onepass number as well as my continental master card, it helps me rack up the miles easily (too bad it doesn't help with elite status tho--UUGGHH!!).

As far as someone getting ahold to my number and having access to my account... Someone actually did us my number and Chase credited my account that very same day that I realized the unauthorized charges had taken place, without a problem, which was the next day.

I never carry cash because I cannot keep track of it and I definitely am not going to pay someone to take my money out of the ATM. I like having all of my spendings on a statement, but that is just me. I guess it depends on the person and also the bank you do business with.
