What is the best combo for MR?

I currently have the AMEX PRG, what other card would work best paired with it? I'm looking for an "everyday card" that will add to my overall pool of membership reward points, I'm not interested in cash back.

Is it possible to get AMEX cards to work similar to the "Chase trifecta"?

Re: What is the best combo for MR?

Yes you can pool points from multiple Amex cards like to can with Chase. The EveryDay cards work well for this but keep in mind the combined annual fee if you go with the EDP. You’ll want to do some analysis on your spend to see which is the better choice between the ED or EDP.

If you have a business the Blue Business Preferred earns 2x on everything for no annual fee on up to $50K of annual spend. That’s an excellent way to earn MR points but that would depend on whether you are eligible for business credit.

Asksebby recently did a video for an "Amex Trifecta" which is basically what MrDisco laid out: Amex Platinum or Gold, Everyday or EDP, and Blue Business Preferred.

Re: What is the best combo for MR?

I'm going to try the following combo:

Amex Plat for 5x on flight purchases

Amex PRG for 2x on Dining, Gas and supermarkets

Amex Everyday for 2x on supermarkets

I will probably cancel the PRG this year if it doesn't make sense and just use the Plat/Everyday.

Thats my dream combo I think!

If I ever get the option to PC my PRG to Platinum I'd jump on that and just use that in conjunction with an no AF everyday card. (If I ever get either one of those, that is!)

Re: What is the best combo for MR?

I hear ya.  I keep trying to justify keeping the PRG but the only points I would get from it are really the supermarkets and dining. Since I have an electric car now, I don't really get gas and if I do, it's at costco which probably doesn't matter.

Even after the PRG airline credit, the AF is $95.  I have to really make a spreadsheet to see what makes sense with the cards I have.  Each one I carry needs to have a purpose.  The ones that don't will probably get axed.

If your grocery spend is high enough that you have multiple cards for it (mine used to be, I'm now closer to a Costco) then the extra rewards from an EDP may be worth the 30x requirement and $95 AF.

Re: What is the best combo for MR?

I wouldn't PC your PRG to Platinum unless they give you a great sign up bonus.  I would wait for a 100k bonus on the Platinum to apply then close your PRG.

I'm on the same boat as you, I collect MRs and wifey collects Hilton points.  I currently use the Platinum Ameriprise for 5x on travel and EDP for everything else to meet the 30 transactions.  Platinum Ameriprise has no AF for the first year and you don't need to be an Ameriprise client. The only negative is that it comes with no bonus, but it's a great way to test drive the card.
