Re: Give your worst credit card advice

So if I can get this straight and this is coming from a newcomer??? When we post questions on here in the forum, we are actually being made fun of??? I can see it through this entire thread. I am a newcomer, and I have not done half of what was said on this thread. I DO NOT bounce checks. I actually paid three of my accounts yesterday with my debit cards. Also the stores that I have applied are stores that I have also shopped at. From one new comer, this thread is very insulting because everyone does not do the same thing. I am just stating my opinion.

don't panic ashby....  most of them are giggling about things they have done early in their profile. it's all in good taste... don't read to much into it.. just take from it "what helps you in your journey" and leave them to have some fun.

rare to be able to have a little fun here... you know...         :]

No one said anything about you or newcomers in general. This is bad things that need to be addressed because most like thread titles from uninformed people who ruin their credit easily.

Re: Give your worst credit card advice

Yes the shopping cart reference was a little bad because alot of people do the shopping cart trick to avoid HP's. I really do not see th harm in that because inquiries cause your credit to take a nose dive

My personal take on it: inquiries are short term damage, and virtually all of the shopping cart trick obtainable cards are short term tradelines.

One can do so much better than that if one thinks of credit building as a long-term endeavour, which it absolutely is.  Shopping cart trick is simply instant gratification and usually unnecessary in likely 98% of the situations.

Re: What not to do

The intent is not to make fun of newcomers Smiley Sad

Everyone here has made one of these mistakes in the past. No ones saying all newcomeres make all or any of these mistakes. Furthermore, if someone makes one of the mistakes here, that doesn't mean they'll make all of the mistakes here and we all know that. This is just a collection of the many pitfalls of credit not targeted or based on any person in particular. They all happen all the time to people who later have fantastic credit and become very savy. My appologies for any offense.

EDIT: I walked away from my computer after typing this up and then hit send when I got back. Looks like this was fully adressed already Smiley Tongue oops

Re: What not to do

I made some of the mistakes in the past.

Most posters are here because they needed to rebuild in some fashion. Only a few are here with thick files 20+ years old.

HOWEVER, the advice is sound.

My biggy what not to do: get credit without having lived a year or two with cash basis covering all expenses including rent, all bills, big purchases, and at least 10% savings every month. Besides the emergency cash plus future retirement needs, this allows savings for big purchases without the need for credit.

Don't do this, then don't have sufficient capital to not mess up credit when emergency strikes.

Re: What not to do

Now that I read back over this post. This is very sound advice. When the I first read the post, I felt like a crazy woman with a frying pan ready to strike. Now I understand where everyone on this post is coming from.
