Re: What's the best way to get a Signature Visa ? apply or CLI ?

The benefit really is achievement and status. To me thats what American Express Platinum is which i could get. I got an invitation 100,000 points if i spent $3,000 but i was talking about my bank America card. About the gold strbucks card i do not drink enough to keep my gold status but i could just buy their ground coffees with the gold stars to maintain my status. You have to spend just much as you would on a 10% cash back to earn a free drink ($100-$120) But! I would have used 10% bank america to load my starbucks gold card until i went online and saw you'll better off buying a preloaded gift cards online and caculations were beyond 10% cash back. STARBUCKS gold all you get is a free drink. I rather get cash back and thats why i never bothered getting a gold starbucks card.

BUT never mind with this. Its just a feel of achievement and like to see something new that you've earned. When you see a boring old visa when someone like you has the same card but with better status or higher tier (visa infinite, visa signature, world mastercard elite) you ask yourself "Why didnt i get that? You didnt earned it."

For the TRAVEL cards ... Barclay is allowing me to product change my Rewards to Arrival + which i find odd because my limit is $2,500 not $5,000 that most would need to earn a World Elite Mastercard so i can possibly hold off the Chase Sapphire Preferred for a year after annual fee kicks in on my Barclay Arrival + but because i already have the Freedom i thought i could be saving more with Chase Sapphire Preffered despite their annual fee.

You are only buying into marketing if you think a credit card gives one a sense of status when compared to anyone else.

Credit is simply a tool to provide benefit to one self. The banks want you to think of it as status and achievement.

Achievement and status? Visa Signature is really not that exciting, trust me and it means nothing about your "status". "Boring old Visa?" I mean most people don't even KNOW what a Visa Signature is.

I highly doubt you should be basing your app decisions on what a cashier thinks. I work in retail, albeit not a cashier but I can tell you I see many, many cards every day and don't really give a flying fig what "tier" they are. So if you think that impresses people....no, I don't think it does.

You are talking about an achievement and status with a DEBT TOOL. Credit cards is all about managing debt which is the essential opposite of your desire. You want to achieve and manage wealth.

This is the problem with society they value the wrong thing. I see most people talking about getting their kid an AU card and helping to build their credit through college, but to me that is not that valuable. That is teaching a kid how to manage debt. When my daughter is old enough I will teach her to focus more on managing wealth. Building a stock portfolio, creating a budget, balancing the checking account and saving  lefover income.

I'm not here to rag on you or preach. But in my opinion you are valuing the wrong thing. A fancy credit card is nothing if you don't have the wealth to cover what you're buying.

You make an excellent point. Credit cards are not wealth. They are not assets. We do not "own" them. They are merely a way to manage debt/pay for things, and with some cards we get small rebates (rewards) in the process. Nothing to define one's status, character or achievements by.

Re: What's the best way to get a Signature Visa ? apply or CLI ?

OP, please stop using giant bolded lettters to make your point. Make it bold, or italic, but there's no need to blow up the font size. We can read without it. Doing it the way you are makes it look like you're yelling. You know?

Anyway, to your point, Bank of America is pretty cool about making your card into a Visa Signature when you reach the $5K credit limit. However, when I called last year to do so, they said the BBR cannot be changed to a Visa Signature, that it only comes as a Platinum Plus, regardless of its limit. My card used to be a cash rewards before that, and I have changed it back since and had no subsequent trouble making it a Siggy.

You've went from Cash Rewards to Better Balance and back to Cash Rewards to get the siggy ? I get more cashback though with BBR because i only use Cash Rewards for 3% gas and was only geting $60 a year when i could be getting $120 a year on BBR so i made the switch. My Elan financal Cash Rewards American Express replaced 3% gas so no longer need Bank America Cash Rewards. Only thing i need now maybe a travel credit card. I used Freedom abroad and encountered $40 of foreign transaction fees but i used it when they had 5% cash back at starbucks and h&m so even with the 3% foreign transaction fees i was still getting more cash back than if i were to use capital one no foreign transaction fee.

I didn't make the changes to specifically get the siggy. It just so happens that I tried it when it was a BBR and they told me that the specific card couldn't be made a Visa Signature. I went back to Cash Rewards for reasons completely unrelated to VS. I just don't like the hassle of having to put something on the card every month AND either remember to put more than $25 every 3 months or open a Bank of America checking account just to collect $100-$120 a year. That the CR was eligible for upgrade to Signature is a complete coincidence.

That's all perfectly fine. What I'm saying is that when I tried to make the BBR a Visa Signature, they couldn't do it. Now, things may have changed since then, so you can call and ask, but I doubt they'd be able to do it.

Well, Bank of America does have a Travel Rewards card and that one is Visa Signature eligible. But depending on your travel spending, likings, habits (brand loyalty vs budget, etc.) you may want to look into an AF flat rewards card like the Capital One Venture or a point card like MR earning Amex or UR earning Chase (CSP to combine with your Freedom?).

Re: What's the best way to get a Signature Visa ? apply or CLI ?

I suggest seeing if you're prequalified for a Capital One Venture, and if so, get it and you'll have your Visa Signature card!

(if you're not prequalified and don't have baddies and have a decent score, you'd still probably get it!)

I was looking at bank america travel rewards but i didnt see any difference between bank america travel rewards and capital one quicksilver which i already have. They both 1.5% no foreign transaction fees.
