I'm looking for tips on keeping several cards active on a budget.
I just used mine for $.89 at Speedway. Truly by accident - thought I had my debit card in hand.
Wow, that was quick. I didn't even think of buying a 1¢ item on eBay. But does that even show up as usage, or does it have to be $1? Also, don't a lot of stores have a policy of not accepting a card for purchases under $5?
And I just read that if you're not really using your card like a normal person, it could be closed. I'm especially concerned because I'm looking at secured cards that require charges every month to graduate to unsecured, and there will be a manual review to determine if I graduate.
Well, none of the items here are charged to your CC as a $0.01 - $0.25 charge...there is S&H involved.
Many DVD's can be found for $0.01 on Amazon but you're really paying around $3.00 with the S&H.
Just go to the grocery store, buy something you need, go home, go online and pay the CC what you just charged. No need for the $0.01 nonsense.
i have a retail store and I don't think people realize how much I have to pay to run your <$1.00 charge.
I pay .20 + % of transaction.
sometimes makes me want to give it to them, had 1 person charge 2 stamps!!
Also...just use a different card each week, like you would use cash...pay that card off at the end of the week, put it away and take out the next card for a week. Some people opt to do this alternating monthly instead of weekly.
It is not legal for any business to claim a minimum purchase must be made. They are under breach of contract with MC, Visa,Discover, Amex or whoever if they tell you this. They are ripping you off and using whatever financial logo to do it. Call that company when you get home (MC, Visa, whoever, etc...) and report that business. Your call will not fall on deaf ears and the next time you go back to that store you can buy a $0.39 stamp if you want (provided they sell stamps...you get the point).

That's due to the contract you signed. You make up that money in other sales and by giving customers the option to use their Visa and MC for bigger purchases. Sorrryyyyyyy.

small little stores like me that don't process much do not have much room to work with companies to get any better rates. I use to pay 3.25% with no per transaction. the .20 works out better for me as long as they charge more than $12. may not be a big deal to do it to someone like speedway, but im just saying it would be nice if everyone considered that a credit card is not free for a merchant and we are in tough times. obviously .20 is not going to put me out of business just a thought though.
