What should my next card be?

Been in the garden for 6 months after my AMEX BCP approval for 20k. I have a NFCU cash rewards card at 31k and some smaller limit cards of not much importance. I am on the fence as to what card I should apply for next? I was thinking of applying for a Dicso card to have some diversity or tap the generosity of Navy again for the Platinum card? Or garden even more and boost my scores? I will assume the Navy card will be of lower interest rate and a higher CL. Of course, nothing is a guarantee. I did prequal for Discover and was given a fixed rate of the lowest interest rate they have.

Re: What should my next card be?

How are your scores and DTI? AOD tends to be my first recommendation since it's 3% back on every purchase but they can be touchy about DTI and student loans.

You could always go for the Discover It Miles card. 1.5% cash back on all purchases with a match at 1 year making it 3% on all purchases for the year. The math works out better for people who don't spend enough to max out the regular Discover categories.

Otherwise you can't go wrong with a regular Disco or another NFCU card.

The Freedom is still available on the website as of now but I think it's gone tomorrow. Would probably jump of that if you're under 5/24 so you can double dip the Freedom Flex SUB later.

I think new apps for Freedom won't be accepted anymore after tomorrow, so if anyone's interested in that card then they need to jump on that one immediately... today.

Edit: whoops you pretty much just said that

To be fair, I did a ninja edit so it may not have been there the first time you saw it. 😂

I would also recommend AOD first.   If you go for Discover IT Miles, plan to convert it to the standard IT after the first year.   Once the match has ended, it's just a 1.5% card with (somewhat) reduced acceptance compared to a V/MC, whereas the standard IT still has the opportunity for 5%

Nah I would apply for the Discover It as a second card when the year is up and get the 10% match as long as they're still offering it. Use the card heavily, ask for a CLI at 6 months, if offered cancel out and call customer service to roll the Miles into the new It.

As far as I know discover now requires a year of history on a new account before a CLI is granted

Scores are all over 700 for FICO 8 and mid-high 700'S for FICO 9. DTI is 18%, UTL is 3%

Re: What should my next card be?

Is your primary goal cashback or travel rewards? If you're looking to expand into travel rewards, and if you're under 5/24, it's really hard to go wrong with the Chase UR ecosystem - with the CSP being a great first card for that (60k SUB).

A lot of people feel that travel rewards aren't the greatest option right now with the pandemic, but I feel the opposite - that it's the perfect time to accumulate a huge stash of travel rewards for when this eventually blows over

Normally I would definitely be traveling 2x a year and a travel card would be a must. But I don't plan on traveling for a year or so, so a travel card is a no at this time. I will be making somewhat large purchases soon and maybe a low interest card would be good with 0 interest for a year.
