What sp does Amex go by?

My grandpa has the PRG. Amex just updated his monthly FICO score (11/29) and it's 734. He's score since jumped fifteen points due to paying down some cards.. If he applies for the SPG or Platinum would they do a fresh SP? Or use the one from last month.

Thank you

Re: What sp does Amex go by?

My guess would be they use the existing soft pull.

This is kind of a moot point though, since being an Amex card member. Declines are soft pills anyway. Plus he can just login to his Amex account, go to the SPG card. Hit apply and it will say if he’s pre approved.

With a FICO score of 734 he should clear the bar for the SPG card as long as he hasn’t had any negative stuff happen with Amex or serious issues on his credit report.

If it doesn't say he's pre-approved then it's better to wait then? He has a trip this month and wanted to put spending towards a sign up bonus. I was just curious if applying would initiate a fresh SP

Re: What sp does Amex go by?

It’s obviously better if it says pre approved, but I don’t see why he wouldn’t be approved at 734. Normally people with scores like that don’t have much negative info if any on their reports. Obviously can’t say for sure without knowing more info about his credit.

I’ve seen a decent amount of data points for the SPG card and tons of people have gotten approved for scores lower.

I would guess it would be the old soft pull though , especially if it was very recent they pulled it.

No harm in applying though since he’s an existing member.

Re: What sp does Amex go by?

He was just approved for the PRG in October. Meet the minimum spending for the bonus this week. Interesting is that it says he's pre-qualified for the Blue Cash and Everyday cards. But he's eyeing the Platinum and SPG. I'll ask him to apply over the phone incase they have different information

From what I’ve read and sort of experienced. The BCE and ED cards have stricter underwriting criteria.

I believe they all have pretty much the same underwriting criteria.

OP- if he's not pre-approved and denied there should be no pull. They would use whatever the last SP score was. I app-ed for a EDP a while ago with no pre-approval and was approved without a HP. Amex called me and specifically said we will approve without a HP.

Was this his first AMEX card? Reason I ask is because for new members AMEX likes to use the same score they applied for for up to 3 months after an approval from what I've seen.

Re: What sp does Amex go by?

He had a gold card which he closed in the 90s. He called them and was approved for the SPG.

This morning I applied for the PRG and was declined (2nd time). Interesting enough they did a hard pull (again). FICO was 712.

Reasons were being an Amex customer too short.

Balance relative to my stated income is too high. I don't understand that reason since I currently have a $0 balance since I meet the sign up bonus last month. Stated income is $58k
