What triggers an auto-CLI?

This might be a tough question but I'm wondering what might trigger an auto-CLI?  Are their certain things that credit card company's computers scan accounts for like score, useage, payments ect...

Re: What triggers an auto-CLI?

this is only my experience and not a general answer to ur question

- Chase, nothing triggered it and called to see if i could get one and CSR said they do offer SP CLI to some but mine wasn't one of them.

- BOA, my 1st every credit card, started at $1,000 and went all the way up to $4,000 and I think I would see a $500 bump after 6 months after heavy use and PIF as well as paying it down in a few months.  but it never grew from there until I HP in July 2013 to $15,000, In Jan this month after 2 months max out and PIF it got auto-cli to $20K, i would always carry a balance of 70-90% up until dec when I PIF and then max out again in Jan and PIF again.

- the other 2 are small and irrevelent for auto-cli since i don't use them that much i don't expect them to auto-cli though citi did auto cli $1K after 12mo as I opened with $2.6K

Re: What triggers an auto-CLI?

I think to get auto cli u need to be loyal to a card and use it alot and always pay it full or atleast a lot more than the minimum. I have got lots of clis but they come from hitting luv buttons both soft and hard. Never logged in to see a surprise cli. Thats just my experience though.

Re: What triggers an auto-CLI?

My personal experience:  Target CLIs I've gotten when I've logged into my account (never asked) and I usually paid my account twice a month never PIF.  But I shopped at Target more then Wal-Mart.  Old Navy account I logged into my account and saw an automatic CLI and then asked for an additional CLI via chat.  I paid twice a month on my Old Navy account and always more then the minimum balance.  The same went for my Lowe's card too.

It seems that the ones I used frequently (not necessariy making huge purchases) but paid more then the minimum balances I would get auto-CLI increases within 3-4 months.

Re: What triggers an auto-CLI?

Some credit card companies are known for doing CLIs every 6 months. Others are just every once in awhile. Are their computers programmed to SPs after a certain about of time then provide an increase if the account meets a certain criteria? This might be a subject that we will never have an answer for.

As an anecdote, the only time I've gotten auto-CLIs is when I"ve posted statements (someitmes a few in a row) using a high amount of my CL for that card (like +50%)  along with a PIF history.

Most recently my Cap1 QS had a 10k starting limit which I posted a couple of 6-7k balances (broken HVAC + holidays, long story) on two statements in a row (both PIF) the very next statement they auto-CLI'd me to 15k.

Makes you wonder if it's a coincidence or a way of helping it happen?

I read something in a thread here a few weeks ago.  It was about ways to get a CLI for Synchrony accounts like Walmart/JCP. The post said something about letting a small balance post for a few months. Then it would be more likely to happen. I read the post just before bed and forget to search for it the next morning.

For those cards, the rare times that I did receive an auto-CLI, I beleve it was after giving them some decent use (mostly the JCP). I don't remember if I had paid the balance before the increase though. I do remember that I was declined when I called for an increase while in the store then I logged in to see an increase a few weeks later.

Re: What triggers an auto-CLI?

to get an auto CLI you need to actually use up the CL you alread have AND pay the balance off in a timely manner. in same cases (and this happened to me with BoA and AmEx in 2009) if you use up like 80% of your CL and take too long to pay they will actually cut your CL. but then again, maybe the CL cuts were due more to it being the heart of the most recent recession where credit was tough to get in general... who knows...

My pattern with Chase auto CLI so far has been: use the card close to limit, let some balance report (40-50%), pay all of it before due date, and rapid spend again. Gets me anything between 40% to 100% CLI.

In credit steps, Cap One gave me a 4X CLI (from $500 to 2k, but then the base was low).

Barclays gave me a CLI once I carried a balance for about 8 months and then PIF'ed.

AMEX gave me a CLI near the 1-year mark. All of these have been auto.

Edit to add: Chase offered me auto CLIs in the 5th month of a/c opening. Nothing after that on the Freedom. Will report if CSP gets anything on the anniversary (also, if it stays open then).
