I don't want to apply for a second card.  I want to replace the DSM with the Blue Cash.

I think it's worth gambling to get a second AMEX, because the DSM carries a hefty AF. If AMEX believes you're gonna keep both, they might be more inclined to issue the Blue.

If you get the Blue, kewlness. Get it in hand, activate it, then cancel the DSM if ya don't want it.

If you get denied for Blue, try recon. If yes, kewlness.

If you still get denied on recon, then I'd call and ask about conversion to Blue.

Exercise every arrow in the quiver. More than a few ways to leverage a DSM to Blue conversion.

Re: When to ask for CLI?

I want to thank everyone on these forums. I just applied for CLI for my Amex Clear Card and was approved instantly.

Congratulations!
Your request to increase your line of credit to $5,000 has been approved and will be available for use within 15 minutes.

I did not ask for much but it will help.

Re: When to ask for CLI?

Ok, so I FINALLY got my Amex (skymiles) &  I waited almost an entire day before I hit the "luv" button and I got the 7-10 message CRAP!  A day went by and I logged on and looked at the application status and I saw two applications, one was for the card that I now had and the other did not list a card name but said APPROVED (what a lovely word)Smiley Very Happy so I quickly assumed that meant my credit line increase.  WRONG!Smiley Mad  I waited a few more days and noticed that my credit line did not increase so I called them.  I asked the gentleman about converting to Blue and he said "No Problem!" So I was able to convert to Blue and I have only had the card a week.  He then transferred me to the credit line dept and they told me that my application was not approved nor denied, but that they could not give me an increase until after 30 days.  She even told me the date that I could get an increase.

Bottom line, I was able to convert to Blue in less than a week but was told 30 days for a CLI. Smiley Happy

And that's the way it is...................

i got the old account wasn't open for more than 30 days letter. if you read the app status page it says it can't be relied on for cli's to call. it still says approved on the app status page, but it was turned down.

i'm going to wait until 10/5 and try it again.

Re: When to ask for CLI?

CITI/Universal lied to me.  I did a balance transfer of $2000 to them on 10/2/07, and they simultaneously granted a $2000 CLI so that my overall %util would not suffer.  They got my balance transfer fee, and then hit me for a hard inquiry, contrary to their agreement.  In setting up this transaction, I explicity asked it it would result in a hard pull on my CR, and the Indian "specialist" explicitly  assured  me that it would iinvolve only a soft pull on my CR.  But, alas, they did a hard pull, and I lost 10 pts on my score due to the pull.  I called them, amazed.  After two hangups by account "specialists" who did not know the different between a hard pull, a soft pull, or the crack in their Indian-accent  buttocks, I finally got through to a manager who could speak English, and she simply told me.... "Sir, I am a manager, and can tell your that all of of CLI requests result in a hard pull, and, sorry, but it is done now, and nothing we can do about it."  So I lost more than I gained, due to obvious bad promises from their overseas "specialists" who do not have any idea of what they are talking about. Beware of the off-sea "specialists" who can hardly speak English, let alone give you real promises.
Just know that a CLI from CITI will give you a hard pull, no matter what the voice from Asia promises you.  It kinda reminds me of Homer Simpson going to the local 7/11, and dealing with Rasheed.  "Can I give you a slurpee?"
